Red Riders battle to important DH sweep

FAIRMONT -- The Weir High baseball team earned an important doubleheader sweep with sectional implications on Tuesday.

First, it bested Fairmont Senior, 8-6, with a two-run seventh inning. Tyler Kelly started the first three frames, Thomas DeVecchis the next 1 2/3, Grant Wilharm the following 2 1/3 for the win and Anthony DiMatteis earned the save.

Offensively, DiMatteis doubled and drove home a run. Mason Drobish tallied a single and three RBIs. Jack Scopel delivered two RBIs and a base knock. Kelly added a double.

In Game 2, the Red Riders defeated East Fairmont, 2-1. DeVecchis started the first 3 1/3 innings, while DiMatteis finished the final 3 2/3 for the win. Luke Gillette and Drobish each brought a run home. The lone hit was a single by Trenton Taflan.

SOFTBALL

Oak Glen 6, South Side 1

NEW MANCHESTER -- Another game and another Maddie McKay dominant pitching performance resulted in an Oak Glen 6-1 victory over the South Side softball squad Tuesday.

McKay went the distance, allowing one unearned run on two hits, four walks and struck out 16. Offensively, she officially did not have an at-bat with four free passes.

Sarah Brown produced two singles and two RBIs. Olivia Munoz doubled and also drove home a pair. McKayla Zoellers had a single and an RBI, while Lizzie Kell brought home another.

The Golden Bears (18-0) tentatively host Wheeling Central today.
