WEIRTON -- The Oak Glen volleyball team rolled to a victory against Hancock County opponent Madonna.
The Golden Bears were in control from the beginning as they swept the Blue Dons, 25-9, 25-7, 25-5, Tuesday night on Joanna Bernabei-McNamee Court.
“We played as a team,” Oak Glen (8-5) head coach Morgan Poling said. “We kept our pace on our side of the net.”
The Blue Dons had no answers for the Golden Bears.
“Oak Glen is a solid team,” Madonna (5-8) head coach Theresa Moore said. “They have a strong swing game. They attacked better than we did.”
For Oak Glen, Ashlyn Six collected 13 kills and three aces, Emma Renfro recorded seven kills and six aces and Gracie Wright tallied 29 assists. Also, Sydney Smith contributed six aces.
For Madonna, Anna Backel collected 26 digs, Nina Daugherty tallied 11 digs and Morgan Owens ended up with two blocks.
“They had a lot of tips and roll shots,” Poling said. “We prepared for those. The girls executed really well.”
The Golden Bears got off to good starts in all three games.
“It was not our best match,” Moore said. “We were able to dig some of their swings, but it was not our best match.”
After rolling to a 25-9 win in the first set to take a 1-0 lead in the match, Oak Glen jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the second game forcing the Blue Dons to call timeout. Moore called another timeout with her team down 17-6, but Madonna was unable to turn the tide as Oak Glen won the second set by 18 points to take a 2-0 lead.
It was more of the same in the third. This time, the visitors recorded the first six points and built an 11-3 lead as the hosts called another timeout, but Madonna was unable to slow down Oak Glen as the Golden Bears won the game by 20 and the match 3-0.
“The season is going well,” Poling said. “We are definitely young, but we have seen a lot of growth this season. That is always exciting to see.”
Oak Glen is scheduled to play in a sectional seeding tournament Saturday at East Fairmont. The tournament gets started at 10 a.m., and the Golden Bears will play four matches in the tournament.
Madonna is slated to play Magnolia at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at home.
