Edison uses scoring spurts to pull away from Toronto

TORONTO -- Edison's girls basketball team showed in spurts Monday night the offensive potential coach Mark Smyth knows his team has.
While the second-year coach would still like to see them do it more consistently, the Wildcats produced more than enough during a couple big scoring runs to take a 56-31 win over Toronto on road.
"We really got it rolling early," Smyth said of his team opening a 17-point first quarter lead. "We had good senior leadership from our older girls, they came out ready to play.
"We're not where we want to be yet. We're taking it one game at a time and hopefully we keep winning."
Pam Johnson led Edison with 13 points, while Alysa Fiedorczyk, Alayna Meadows and Grace Browning each netted 10 points.
Olivia Huff finished with nine tallies on the scoresheet, nearly putting five scorers in double figures. She led the Wildcats (3-3) in assists (three) and rebounds (four).
A lot of the scoring came in two spurts -- one in the first quarter to open a 20-3 lead, and a 14-0 third quarter run to push the advantage to 33 before the subs came in.
"It has been like that all season," Smyth said of streaky scoring. "We'll have a good time where we score 30 points in a quarter, then we'll have bad times where we score three. It's just momentum, I guess.
"The key for us is finding more consistency and getting line ups in that work together. We've got to get the ball in the basket more consistently. It lets us get into the things we want to do on defense when we do."
Johnson connected three times from beyond the arc.
"The last two years, Pam Johnson has lit it up in here," Toronto head coach Rusty Hodgkiss said. "We struggled to score the ball. We couldn't match their physicality or their speed and athleticism. They out-ran us up and down the floor.
"(Edison) played well, they played really well."
The Red Knights (1-4) were led by Morgan Donnelly's game-high 14 points, while Cameryn Allen added six. Donnelly nailed four shots from distance.
"They had a couple spurts where everything was going in, and we helped that by not getting back in transition, not knowing who we were guarding, not guarding the ball," Hodgkiss said. "Kudos to them."
