Wrestlers from area schools competed in districts tournaments in Divisions II and III this past weekend, and 10 local wrestlers were successful in qualifying for next week’s OHSAA Wrestling Championships in Columbus.

In Division II, which held its district tournament at Gallia Academy, Indian Creek’s Austin Starr, an Ohio University commit, claimed the 190-pound district championship with a 39-second pin of Minerva’s Garrett Hilliard in the championship match.

His Indian Creek teammates C.J. Spencer (144 pounds) and Dom Paterra (150 pounds) were runners up in their weight classes, each dropping close decisions 9-8 and 3-2 respectively.

Reese Spencer (165 pounds) also earned a spot in Columbus by placing fourth, dropping a close decision in the third-place match.

The Redskins as a team placed fifth overall.

Big Red, led by a pair of runners up, finished in sixth.

Brody Saccoccia dropped a 10-6 decision to Sheridan’s Alexander Crane in the 120-pound final, while Peyton Tuttle was second by pin to Gauge Sampson of Maysville at heavyweight.

Savier Faulks picked up a decision win for third at 150 pounds, while Brandon Kinney pinned his way to third at 190 pounds. Cal Beadling was fourth at 126 pounds to make the trip to states next week.

In the Division III tournament contested at Heath, Harrison Central’s Lucas Thomas decisioned Wyatt Moyer from Sandy Valley in the 215 pound final to claim the district title.

The Huskies as a team cracked the top 10 and placed in ninth overall.

The state tournament, which will be held inside the Schottenstein Center on the campus of the Ohio State University, begins Friday and runs through Sunday.
