Wrestlers from Weir, Oak Glen moving on to state finals

HUNTINGTON — A pair of all-OVAC bouts highlight Saturday night’s West Virginia State Boys Wrestling Tournament championship finals inside Marshall Health Arena.

A total of eight northern panhandle combatants will vie for state titles after winning two matches each on Friday. The top six placers in each weight class earn all-W.Va. honors.

DIVISION II

The OVAC is guaranteed at least two state champions as local matchups loom at 106 and 165 in the ‘Small School’ division.

In the lightweight bout, Cameron sophomore Maverick Lilley will face a familiar foe in Oak Glen junior Jordan Tomsic. The two met in the North Region I finals with Lilley prevailing.

The other all-local matchup has Cameron junior Eli Tedrow facing Weir junior Joshua DeFelice. Tedrow won their North Region I championship bout by major decision. Tedrow was a state champ at 157 last winter.

The Dragons also have junior Braxton Birch (132) and sophomore Talen Brown (157) alive for titles. Birch was second at 126 and Brown fourth at 144.

Oak Glen senior Noah Schmidt (215) will look for a state title after finishing second at 285 last season.

Weir freshman Chad Artman (126) joins DeFelice in the state finals. He will face East Fairmont’s Haydyn Spitznogle whom he defeated, as the No. 9 seed, in the North Region I first-round two weeks ago. Spitznogle was a state runnerup in Division I last year for Fairmont Senior.

Cameron’s Marshall Crow (157); Oak Glen’s Wyatt Wolanski (144); and the Wheeling Central trio of Tylique Marshall (113), Wyatt Brady (190) and Dominic Paesani (285) all earned all-state honors and are still alive for third place.

Ripley leads the team race with 149.5 points. Herbert Hoover checks in with 103.5, which is a half-point better than Cameron. Oak Glen (64) is eighth, followed by Weir (58.5) in ninth. Wheeling Central is 14th with 38.

DIVISION I

Only one individual — Wheeling Park senior Isaac Sands (165) — will compete for a state title in the “Big School” division.

The Patriots standout will meet Bridgeport’s John Knight for the state title. The duo met in the North Region I finals two weeks ago, with Sands suffering an ankle injury that forced him to default.

Wheeling Park had two other individuals earn all-state as Hunter Flanegin (106) and Nate Hodge (157) are still alive in the consolation bracket.

John Marshall will put Milo Ward (106), Nathan Hughes (120), Kai Johnson (165), Spencer South (175) and JT Morris (190) on the awards podium, while Brooke’s Anthony Maple (113) and Landon Burdine (132) are still alive.

University (199.5) and Parkersburg (193) have made it a two-school race for the team title. John Marshall (63) is seventh, while Wheeling Park (48.5) is 11th and Brooke (26) 16th.

GIRLS

Nineteen northern panhandle wrestlers will take to the mat for the first time Saturday as action begins at 8 a.m.

Wheeling Park leads the local contingent with eight qualifiers. Tyler Consolidated has five, while John Marshall and Magnolia have two each. Cameron and Oak Glen have one each.

The championship finals for both boys and girls begin at 7:30 p.m.
