Athlete personality makes games fun

In Sunday’s victory over the New York Jets, Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown did the unthinkable after scoring a touchdown. He calmly walked to the back of the end zone and handed the ball, thrown by Ben Roethlisberger, to a fan sitting in the front row wearing a No. 84 Brown jersey. It was a traditional Brown celebration. Yet, it wasn’t the flashy extracurriculars that have drawn scorn from the media in the first five weeks of the season. Brown found another way to perturb the masses on Sunday with Muhammad Ali-inspired cleats. A week prior, Brown wore cleats to honor the ...

The King and his people

You know how big a person is when Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods are in the supporting cast. That’s Arnold Palmer. The King died Sunday at the age of 87. He brought golf to the masses in a way no one else has ever done. He’s the one who allowed PGA Tour players to play for more money. Palmer was the first golfer who would play offensive golf — going for par 5 greens in two, hitting at any flagstick. He was Phil Mickelson long before Phil Mickelson. Palmer was an icon beyond icons. We tend to surround ourselves with people who help us be the best we can be or tear us ...

Negativity has to end

We live in a negative society. Just look around us. A sports win is dissected in too many ways, and a loss even more so. For some reason, there has to be someone to take the blame, take the fall, you might say. We have a hard time giving others their due. The D our children just brought home is because the teacher stinks, not because our children were lazy on the assignment. I talked to the mother of a former high school quarterback and she told me she has more fun at high school football games now because adults aren’t yelling at her son. We forget about real life and ...

The power of a seed

I received a Facebook message last week from a former player at Jefferson County Christian School and it brightened my life. We never really know the impact we make on people unless something is said. You can never underestimate the power of a seed. You can also never underestimate what the seed is being watered with. Vitriol? Sarcasm? Love? Kindness? Whatever that liquid is will make an impact. Not only will it make an immediate impact, it will also have some sort of lasting impact, because it won’t be forgotten. “That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat ...

What the flag means

What the flag means Please understand that I see the flag and the national anthem disrespected each week during football season. I watch people as they walk through the parking lot while it is being played and do not stop. Because, apparently, you can only stand at attention while INSIDE the stadium and being three feet outside of the fence, or underneath the stands, means you can carry on with your conversation. I watch kids continually play around and talk. It’s like we are immune to our national anthem because we have heard it throughout our lifetime. I get ...

What I did on my summer vacation

We ended the best season in school history March 21st after falling to eventual NCAA champion UConn in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Following that exciting time, we had a few days off before starting our postseason workouts. Postseason lasted about two weeks, and then we were ...
