All those years ago

To the Editor, Bob Seger asks himself in a song, Like A Rock..20 years now, where did they go? I myself like others my age, wonder the same thing. Next year will be my 50th anniversary from Madonna High School… May 28,1976. But doing that time, we grew up with some inventions. Eight track players, reel to reel tape recorders, cassette players, quadraphonic stereos, and calculators. Customized vans, Citizen Band radios, and cable television appeared later on. But as I look back on all the inventions, pay phone booths, Murphys, KMart, Grants, Sears, and other stores/ malls are ...

Trump, Kelly still battling

To the editor: Recently, President Donald J. Trump, totally inappropriately and completely without merit, announced that he and his administration were strongly considering re-enlisting Sen. Mark Kelly, a Democrat from Arizona, into active military duty, in order to formally court-martial and disgrace him for his statement, which had been made in unison with five of his Democratic colleagues, that those in the military service to our great country must defy illegal orders and abide by their oath to military service, the U.S. Constitution and military protocol and not to simply break ...

Thanksgiving volunteers are appreciated

To the Editor, For over 30 years, volunteers from the Weirton Ministerial Association (WMA), Rotary Club, the Salvation Army and various businesses in our town have donated their time, talent and treasures to sponsor the Annual Thanksgiving Dinner Feast for our Senior Citizens and shut-ins of our community. This year was no exception as Jeannie Smith from WMA and Lisa Conti from Rotary, Majors Eric and Tonya Roberts of the Salvation Army, coordinated this effort on Thanksgiving Day. Dozens of volunteers showed up at 7:30 am to pack and deliver meals throughout the city. President ...

Are you nice?

To the Editor, How pleasant it is to be with nice people. A bevy of matronly women gushing over decorations on a well-lit Christmas tree is certainly nice. What’s even nicer are the same women making a fuss over a baby smiling his gummy, toothless smile while gurgling with delight, waving his little arms and kicking his chubby legs. Some things are not nice at all. In attendance at a church service were two young men listening to a solo sung by a portly gentleman who’d most willingly volunteered to sing when the pastor asked if anyone should like to sing a solo. There he ...

Dean Martin’s ‘Silver Bells’

To the Editor, The Polar Vortex is coming — it is going to be a real old-fashioned Christmas season. Who can forget rushing downtown from store to store and spending time looking at windows decorated at the Hub? The magical festive season, which greeted big-eyed children the same way they had welcomed googly-eyed great-grandparents and grandparents years earlier, who had traveled on icy train tracks, then on a streetcar, eating hot roasted peanuts. It was a time of second-hand trees, and homeless men holding a cup of soup from a gurgling, crackling caldron gathered in the Steubenville ...

Slagged by the fill

To the Editor, Sometime around the end of October, the City of Weirton came and put down perhaps a ton of slag on our lane. While it is indeed appreciated, as there were many ruts and ditches that needed to be filled in, an issue quickly arose, with sizeable metal shards and shavings, which were embedded in the slag. As I walked my dog several times a day, I began picking up and keeping some of the pieces I’d happen across. These were not small, inconsequential pieces of metal; shards of aluminum and steel, anywhere from somewhat less than an inch to several inches long. One in ...
