Near miss: A Jewett Road (Steubenville) resident cleaning a gun to prepare for a CCW class the following day shot himself in the leg when he pulled the trigger to release the slide, Friday. His fiance told police she called 911, got him in the car and drove to the Pottery Addition Fire Department to await an ambulance, but sheriff’s deputies arrived first and realized the man was bleeding heavily and had nicked an artery. An officer used a tourniquet to control bleeding until TEMS arrived and took over his care. TEMS, in turn, called for STAT Medivac to fly him to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment.

Out of it: A man allegedly entered a residence and a vehicle on Hanna Avenue in Adena, Sunday. Dustin Earl Hanlin, 36, 43 E. Main St., Apt. A, Adena, was booked into the Jefferson County jail on charges of burglary and breaking and entering, deputies said. One homeowner said she awoke to a man who she thought was under the influence of an illicit substance in her kitchen and said her son grabbed him by the arm and removed him from her home. A neighbor told deputies she saw the same man enter a truck at her residence. Nothing was taken, but the owner of the truck and the homeowner both told deputies they want to pursue charges.

Questions: The Jefferson County Dog Warden called for help Saturday when two women got into a fight over a dog, each claiming the other threatened them with bodily harm and the owner refusing to accept a citation. The dog’s owner said the other woman had claimed her dog went under the fence and attacked her dog, but pointed out “the bottom of the fence can’t even be pulled out and her dog is too fat to fit under it.” Deputies told her it was important to just accept the citation and “figure the rest out in court.” The other woman admitted taking a swing at her because she “kept running her mouth” but said she missed

Why be married: Smithfield residents who’d been out drinking got into a fight when they got home, Saturday. The female said her husband “doesn’t like certain people” who were at the bar and they started fighting once they got home, so she broke his phone and threw it at him and he punched her. He left their residence, then came back and got in the shower. He locked the door so she said she tried to kick it open and the door jammed. Her husband told deputies to go ahead and kick the door in because it was jammed and he couldn’t get out of the shower to talk to them. He said his wife had hit him in the head twice with the cell phone, but neither of them wanted to pursue charges. He stayed elsewhere for the night.

Volatile situation: An Empire man was upset that his neighbors stood in the street, yelling and threatening him and his property because a friend was visiting him they didn’t like, Friday. A female living next to him told deputies his guest had sexually assaulted her last year, though no charges were filed and she did not seek a protective order. She said seeing him that close “made her angry so she was yelling in the streets, calling them names” but insisted she never threatened anyone.

What an impression: Deputies had to help a bar manager on Bantam Ridge remove an unruly patron from the premises, Saturday. The manager said the woman entered a half hour before last call, and after one beer became “irate and began harassing the bartenders and other patrons inside the bar.” He said they just wanted her to leave and never come back.

Taken advantage: A senior citizen was scammed out of $2,500 by thieves who convinced they worked for Microsoft and her computer had been hacked, Friday. She said she called the number on her screen and a man named Harry told her all her financial accounts and phone lines had been hacked by someone in China and they’d gotten away with $2,900, and the only way to fix it would be to make a purchase for the same amount. She said the man named Harry had complete control of her computer and phone and directed her to outlets where she could buy gift cards and read her the pin numbers. She said he kept her on the phone and told her not to talk to anyone else. She said he computer was finally usable later that night.
