Steubenville Police

Magnetic attraction: A woman who befriended a couple earlier in the year said the friendship has soured and now the female “has accused her of being romantically interested” in her beau, Monday. She said she’s no longer interested in being friends or communicating with them but they’re still contacting her, “calling her derogatory and vulgar names and challenging her to come outside and fight.” Police explained to her what she’d have to do to obtain a civil protection order.

Cracked up: Police were asked to check on a “possibly deceased male” in a house in the 2400 block of Cleveland Avenue, Monday. Upon arrival they could see the man through a window “slumped over in an office chair,” unmoving so they made entry. Police said they revived him with a sternum rub, and he was taken to an area hospital.

Trio served: Police executing a traffic stop at Seventh and Logan streets ended up taking three people in the vehicle into custody, Monday. Served with warrants for failure to appear were Lorrene Berberoglu, 55, 3179 St. Johns Road, Colliers, (Belmont County warrant); David Bradley, 36, of East Liverpool (Columbiana County warrant); and Ciera Kugler, 35, 256 Jewett Road, Steubenville (Toronto County court warrant), police said. Police said eight pills found in a purse may result in an additional charge.

Disputed: Employees at Wal-Mart told police they thought a couple was trying to leave the store with merchandise that hadn’t been paid for, Monday. They said the pair was seen shopping and while in the store changed their baby’s diaper and switched out the dirty clothing their children were wearing for clean items from store racks, but claim when they were checking out, they’d neglected to scan those items. The couple said the kids were wet and dirty and they were going to buy them new stuff to wear anyway so they took the tags off and got the clothes on the kids and they’d rung their purchases up, including the new kid clothes, but the self-checkout was acting up and they’d called an employee over to help “and the merchandise had to be exchanged at one point.” Store personnel insisted only one of the four tags in question had scanned and, because the couple had allegedly been involved in attempted thefts at other Wal-Marts in Ohio, the company is pursuing charges but they let the couple purchase the three items in question “instead of removing them from the children.” Police pointed out the couple had paid for all of the other items in the cart and still had their kids’ dirty, wet clothing in the cart. The three items in question totaled just under $12.

Calming effect: Someone reported a disturbance in the 600 block of Grandview Avenue, Monday. Police said as they arrived, they could hear “what sounded like two individuals yelling,” but as they approached the front door all was silent. A woman who came to the door advised nothing was taking place and no assistance was needed. Another woman who was present said the same.

All wet: A Lawson Avenue resident told police someone poured a soda or energy drink all over her car, leaving a sap-like film over most of it, Monday. She said the vandals also coated her headlights with white and black paint.

Charged: Two people are facing charges after employees at Wal-Mart told police a couple walked into the store with an empty backpack that was full when they tried to leave, Monday. They allege the pair stuffed clothing in the backpack and tried to leave. Police said Kenneth L. Payne, 48, and Melissa R. Huntington, 42, both of 1267 Sinclair Ave., Steubenville, were charged with petit theft.

Summons issued: Samuel E. Brown, 38, 2425 Cleveland Ave., possession of drug paraphernalia, Monday.

Code issues: Notice of violation was sent to the owner/occupants of a property at 1257 Lincoln Ave., high grass/weeds scattered litter and household garbage on property and vacant lot next to it.

Cited: Nancy K. Weekly, 659 Cross Lane, Wellsburg and Jesse J. Harris, 21, 145 Saline St., Irondale, both for speeding; Abbigale Ayers, 20, 512 S. Fifth St., Steubenville, driving under suspension.

Jefferson County Sheriff

Star struck: A Dillonvale youth said he was accidentally struck in the head with a golf club while he and his brother were “attempting to make a TikTok video,” Monday. His brother said he was trying to video him swinging the club and let go of it, and it came back and struck him in the face. Deputies said the boy had a small laceration above his eye but Mount Pleasant EMS checked him out. Family members decided a trip to the hospital wasn’t necessary.

Smell test: A Tiltonsville caller reported smelling sulfur in a building, Monday. Deputies said they didn’t detect anything out of the ordinary in the air nor did most residents they spoke with.
