JVS health tech students head to state HOSA event
BLOOMINGDALE — Health technologies students at the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School will get their chance to shine during the Health Occupations Students of America Future Health Professionals State Leadership Conference in April.
Health tech instructor Tammy Sismondo, who serves as the school HOSA adviser, said inclement weather forced the cancelation of the regional competition at Buckeye Career Center in New Philadelphia on Feb. 17, but the students excelled with prior testing and moved on to the state event, which will be held on Wednesday and Thursday at the University of Toledo’s Glass City Center.
“I’m really proud of all of the students,” Sismondo said. “They worked really hard to go there. They had to take a written test but the weather wreaked havoc on the regional competition.”
She added that she was pleased to see them do well on the online tests.
Those who placed included the following:
• Junior Ava Watkins, second, and senior Isabella Krulcik and junior Braylee Dunfee, who tied for fourth, all for behavioral health;
• Seniors Vanessa Davis and Lexie Reed, who tied for first, and senior Hailey Wade, third, for home health aide;
• Senior Caitlyn Hager, first, human growth and development;
• Senior Ashley Brown, first, phlebotomy;
• Junior Alexis Kight, second, for nurse assisting;
• The team of seniors Zoe Board and Madison Cost, first; the team of juniors Daelynn Hordle and Lilian Gibbons, second; and the team of juniors Brooke Scharfenberg and Journey West, third, CPR/First Aid;
• Senior Lexas Lashhorn, first, for clinical specialty.
HOSA unites members from across Ohio to demonstrate their skills, knowledge and leadership abilities at regional, state and international competitions, and those who succeed at the state level may advance to the HOSA International Conference for competitions on June 26-29 in Houston.
