IACC notes rotation of meeting

sites, welcomes new members

STEUBENVILLE — The Italian-American Cultural Club will be rotating their meeting venue, officials have announced.

The March meeting will be held at Scaffidi’s Restaurant and Tavern in Steubenville; the April meeting at the Mingo Knights of Columbus Hall in Mingo Junction with the food being prepared by Ohio Catering; the May meeting at Le Chateau Pier in Smithfield with the food being prepared by Piergallini Catering; and the June meeting will be held at St. Florian Center in Wintersville with the food being prepared by Undo’s Catering. Members were reminded to RSVP.

The February meeting was held at Froehlich’s Classic Corner in Steubenville where club President Frankie DiCarlantonio announced that five applicants were accepted and voted on as new members. They are Richard Blankenship, Rich and Rose Varaglotti, and Ettore and Jeanine Scassa.

Vice President Lucia Scaffidi announced that the scholarship forms must be returned and postmarked by March 31. The scholarship winners will be announced at the April meeting and will be presented at the May meeting. For information and applications, contact Lucia.

Dates for the club’s fundraising events were announced. The summer serenade will be held Aug. 2, and the Festa del Vino will be held on Nov. 8. Both events will be chaired by the club’s secretary, Judy Krenzel. Financial Secretary Tami Cashioli presented a report on La Bafana and announced that Campo Italiano will be held June 17-21. Information on all events will be provided at a later date.

January and February birthdays were celebrated.

Winners for the evening were Tami Cashioli, Joann Giralico and Doby Piergallini.

Jefferson Farm Bureau

committee to meet March 5

STEUBENVILLE — The Jefferson County Farm Bureau Promotion and Education Committee will meet for a planning session at 11 a.m. March 5 at the Breakfast Club in the Hollywood City Center, Steubenville.

Jeanne Roberts will preside at the session where discussion topics will include the Ag Baby gift basket; book of the year distribution; place mat distribution for Agriculture Week; planning of the spring farm-city luncheon; and an update on the “Straight from the Heart” woman’s seminar in October. The latter is held in Tuscarawas County and made available for women from Jefferson, Harrison, Carroll and Tuscarawas counties.

Roberts reminds members to bring the pennies collected during the month to be used for the purchase of children’s books on farming that are read and presented to all Jefferson County schools.

Members also are reminded to wear green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.

CHANGE Inc. offers monthly

home buyer education class

WEIRTON — CHANGE Inc. has scheduled monthly home buyer education workshops throughout 2019, providing participants with six hours of classroom instruction focusing on preparing to purchase a home.

Utilizing the Neighbor Works “Realizing the American Dream” Prospective, homeowners learn the entire home-buying process from managing money and understanding credit to securing a mortgage loan and shopping for a home.

Workshops are held each month at several locations throughout the Northern Panhandle. The cost is $50 for an individual and $75 for a couple. If you have proof of financial hardship (Eligibility letter for adults from DHHR), the fee can be waived.

Participants will receive the Realizing the American Dream manual, and snacks and drinks will be provided.

Once the workshop is over, the participants will meet individually with a housing counselor to construct an individual household spending plan, with housing goals and timelines, review the manual worksheets and obtain a certificate of completion. Continuing financial education will be provided through West Virginias Saves program.

Fundraisers to help Follansbee

Community Days announced

FOLLANSBEE — Fundraisers to benefit Follansbee Community Days have been announced.

One is a quarter auction that will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on April 7 at the Follansbee Community House at Follansbee Park.

The other is a Lenten fundraiser featuring the sale of quarts of pasta fagioli soup for $5 a quart.

The take-out only sale will be held at the Follansbee Community House from noon to 6 p.m. on Fridays in March — March 8, 15, 22 and 29 — and on two Fridays in April — April 5 and 19.

Library book discussion

group to meet on March 9

WEIRTON — The Mary H. Weir Public Library’s book discussion group will meet at 11 a.m. on March 9.

Up for discussion will be “The Invention of Wings” by Sue Monk Kidd. New members and visitors are always welcome.
