Funseeker’s say goodbye at final meeting
WEIRTON — Members of the Funseeker’s Club gathered at Undo’s restaurant in the Holiday Inn in Weirton on Sept. 3 to hold the group’s final meeting.
The senior citizens club was founded in the late 1990s by a group of friends and neighbors who were looking for friendship, fellowship and a sense of community.
The meeting was called to order by Vice President Larry Bauer, who led the group in the abscense of President Cathy DiBenedetto.
Officials noted DiBenedetto has been suffering from an illness and was hospitalized.
Joann Bugin led the traditional opening services, including the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance, the singing of “God Bless America,” a short reading and then a prayer prior to the evening’s meal.
During the business portion of the meeting, it was announced that following several months of seeking new leadership, along with the lack of people volunteering to serve as officers during the 2025-26 year, current board members met and agreed to dissolve the Funseeker’s Club.
Membership has declined since the days when there was a waiting list to join the popular group.
Today, there are fewer than 50 active members taking part in the monthly meetings.
A meeting was held at Undo’s to discuss the final meeting’s agenda. In attendance were board members, current officers DiBenedetto, Bauer, Diane Sogan and Mary Beth Bauer and founding member Regina Truax.
The board addressed the final meeing and discussed the distribution of the club’s treasury funds. Several actions were planned for the September meeting.
Among the plans for the treasury funds were to use them to pay for everyone who attended the September meeting’s dinner charge.
Next, all planned expenses for the meeting — including door prizes and entertainment — would be coverd by the treasury funds.
The planned entertainment for the evening had canceled; therefore, that expense was added to the door prize fund, officials noted.
It was decided that the 50/50 drawing would award a second winner, with two people winning the drawing.
All remaining funds were to be divided and awarded as additional door prizes at the final meeting.
The door prizes that were presented by Chuck and Joann Bugin were awarded first, followed by a prize of treasury funds.
Members were encouraged to investigate and then join one of the other senior clubs in the area. Those in attendance agreed with the board’s recommediations.
The 50/50 drawing winners were Carl Truax and Bauer.
Mums from Iannitti’s Greenhouse were presented by the Bugins and awarded to the following individuals: Frank Cole, Mary Beth Bauer, Jean Dalfanzo, Gene Viola, Larry Purks, Larry Bauer, Phyllis Riapos, Donna Balzano, Joe DiBenetto, Chuck Bugin, Carl Truax, Joann Bugin, Jo Llewellyn, Mike Rowland, Michelle Fabro and Les Stuckmeyer.
Undo’s gift certificates were won by Marilyn DiLeonardo and Barb Purks.
Treasury door prizes were awarded to: Larry Purks, Joann Bugin, George Pohlman, Marilyn DiLeonardo, Viola, Fabro, Ann Iachinni, Stuckmeyer, Llewellyn and Gene Dalfanzo.
Joann Bugin said a goodbye blessing to conclude the final meeting of the Funseeker’s.
