Church to hold pet blessing

WEIRTON — St. Thomas Episcopal Church will hold a pet blessing from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the church, located on Three Springs Drive in Weirton. This will be a drive-through event, which is open to the public. For information, contact the church at (304() 723-4120.

Swing dance returns

STEUBENVILLE — Steubenville Swing Dance, relaunched under the leadership of dance instructors Dan Selmeczy and Mary Selmeczy, returns to downtown Steubenville, offering beginner-friendly mini-lessons and live jazz music in the third-floor ballroom of Leonardo’s Coffeehouse.

“We’re excited to reopen Steubenville Swing Dance and continue the tradition of bringing people together through dance and live music,” said Dan Selmeczy, co-instructor and event organizer. “Our goal is to make it fun, welcoming and affordable. You don’t need prior experience to have a great time.”

Each event includes short five-minute lessons in swing, rumba and foxtrot, followed by an evening of social dancing and live jazz performed by Matt Hill and the Classics. Lessons are designed for beginners, but enjoyable for seasoned dancers, as well.

The next dance night will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 9. Admission is $15 per couple or $10 per person, payable at the door. No partner is required. All ages are welcome.

Soup and sandwich sale set

WEIRTON — The American Legion Auxilary Post 10 in Weirton will hold a soup and sandwich sale from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday. The fundraiser will be held at the post, located at 3140 Pennsylvania Ave.

Patrons will have the opportunity to dine in or carry out their orders. Some of the soups that will be available include minstrone, wedding, stuffed pepper and beef vegetable. Sandwiches will include tuna salad, ham salad and egg salad. Various desserts will be sold, as well.

Photo contest now open

STEUBENVILLE — The Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District is seeking amateur photographers to submit photos for its 2025 annual photo contest. Submissions will be accepted through Oct. 10, with up to four photos permitted in the categories of “Power of Water,” “One of These Things is Not Like the Others,” “Walk in the Woods” or “Photographer’s Choice.” Submissions must be natural resources related and taken within Jefferson County. Photos will be displayed at the district’s annual meeting and banquet Oct. 27. Guests will vote by secret ballot for a first-place winner in each category.

The first-place winners will receive a cash award and an opportunity to have their photo shown on district education and promotional items. For information regarding contest requirements and rules, visit jeffersonswcd,org, the JSWCD Facebook page or call (740) 264-9790.

Potential troopers offered ride-alongs

COLUMBUS — Those considering a career as an Ohio state trooper can participate in a ride-along program to gain experience and a firsthand look into the daily duties and responsibilities of troopers. Participants will ride in a cruiser alongside a trooper for a day, afternoon or night shift, observing responses to calls for service, conducting traffic stops and engaging with the public.

To be eligible, applicants must have a valid driver’s license, be between the ages of 18-39 and participate in a brief interview with the post commander. The OSHP is committed to recruiting and training highly-motivated individuals who wish to serve their state and community by joining the next generation of state troopers. Those interested in participating in a ride-along are encouraged to contact their local Ohio State Highway Patrol post.

Veterans commission to meet

STEUBENVILLE — The regular monthly meeting of the Veterans Service Commission of Jefferson County will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the commission office, located at 500 Market St., Suite 310 in Steubenville. All veterans and interested parties are welcome to attend.

Retirees to meet

STEUBENVILLE — More than 20 members of the Steubenville City Schools Retirees met for lunch at the Ville on Sept. 11.

Memories, stories and laughs were shared. Get-well cards were signed for those in the group in need of well wishes. Those in attendance announced the collection continues for the retirees’ annual Christmas charity for needy adults. Anyone who would like to contribute can do so at any of the groups upcoming luncheons through December.

The next meeting of the SCSR will take place Thursday at the Farm Restaurant and Pub in Adena.

OVHC shares fundraiser results

STEUBENVILLE — Officials with the Ohio Valley Health Center shared the results of its Kickin’ it for OVHC Kickball Tournament fundraiser.

The fifth-annual event raised $8,000 for the center’s medication room through the support of area residents. Four teams gathered at the ballfields in Bellevue Park. Together, participants, sponsors and supporters met in a display of community spirit, helping to meet the nonprofit’s goal.

Teams included members of the Angels in the Outfield, Commissioner Eric Timmons, Capital Health Care Network and Richmond Engineering. Angels in the Outfield was this year’s winning team.
