Genealogy workshops offered

NEWELL — A genealogy workshop has been scheduled for the public, free of charge, in the hopes of assisting individuals in researching their family history. Sponsored by the Tri-State Genealogical and Historical Society, the event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 6.

“Join us in an exciting workshop that will help you begin your family history research or help you break down a brick wall you have been struggling with,” stated Martha Gittings, a volunteer with the historical society.

Located in the rear of the former Wells High School at 717 Washington St., Room 103, in Newell, officials announced the building is open every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the year for residents to come and research their ancestors. Democratic Women to meet

STEUBENVILLE — The next monthly board meeting of the Jefferson County Democratic Women take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Schiappa Library, located at 4141 Mall Drive in Steubenville.

CWC to hold used Christmas item sale

HOPEDALE — The Harrison County Catholic Women’s Club announced its upcoming 24th-annual CWC used Christmas items sale, to be held over the course of two weekends in November. The sale, which will take place at the Sacred Heart Church Hall in Hopedale, will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 7 and Nov. 14 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 8 and Nov. 15. Books and Brews event planned

STEUBENVILLE — Books and Brews is set to take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Main Library.

Sponsored by the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County, the event will feature beer tasting, a charcuterie board and insight into the world of craft brewing.

A presentation will be given by certified beer judge Jim Chaney. Open to adults 21 and older, the event will feature a chance to win Stanley brand growlers and more. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the Main Library or online at business.jeffersoncountychamber.com/events.

Vendor show and bake sale set

WINTERSVILLE — The Blessed Sacrament Catholic Women’s Club will hold a vendor show and bake sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 9 at Sargus Hall.

The hall is situated behind Blessed Sacrament Church, located at 852 Main St. in Wintersville.

Club members will be selling homemade soups, including wedding soup and tomato tortellini. The price will be $5 for a 10-ounce bowl or $10 for 32-ounce quart. Homemade pastries and warm pretzels will also be sold. Dine-in or carry out will be offered.

Several vendors will be on hand, offering a variety of items, such as hand-crafted gifts, wreaths, Tupperware, Mary Kay products, honey and freeze-dried treats. This fundraiser will include a 50/50 drawing and Chinese auction. Vendors are still being accepted. Anyone interested can call (740) 317-4108.

Soup, sandwich fundraiser planned

SMITHFIELD — The Smithfield Historical Society will hold a soup, sandwich and dessert sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 8 at its building, located on Main Street in Smithfield. Patrons are invited to dine in or carry out their purchases.

Several types of homemade soups will be available, as well as hot chicken sandwiches, hot dogs or coney dogs. A variety of desserts will be on sale as well.

Proceeds from the annual event will be used toward the upkeep of the building and community projects. The historical museum is open for viewing during the time of the fundraiser or through visits arranged by contacting President Linda Kovach at (740) 733-8381.

Donations of town memorabilia are welcome.
