Church to hold fundraiser
WELLSBURG — The Altar and Rosary Society of St. John Evangelist Church in Wellsburg, will hold a soup and sandwich sale beginning at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the church, located at 1300 Charles St.
The sale will continue until all of the food is sold, according to organizers. Patrons will have the option to dine in or carry out their purchases. Carryout orders can be placed by calling the church after 11 a.m. at (304) 737-8051.
Wednesday’s menu will consist of the following soups: Pasta fagioli, vegetable, chicken noodle and stuffed pepper. Sandwiches will include chicken salad and egg salad croissants, Italian roast beef, barbecue ham and Italian hoagies. An assortment of desserts will be available for sale as well.
Members of the Altar and Rosary Society would like to thank everyone who continues to support the group’s fundraisers and for making it possible for the success of the society’s annual Christmas cookie sale.
Auxiliary to hold uniform sale
WEIRTON — The Weirton Medical Center Auxiliary will host a two-day Robert’s Medical Uniform fundraising sale Wednesday and Thursday. The event will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday in the atrium lobby of Weirton Medical Center. The sale will feature a variety of fashion styles and brands, according to organizers.
Locomotion Weekend set
PITTSBURGH — All aboard! Area residents are invited to kick off the new year at the Kamin Science Center during its upcoming Locomotion Weekend, set to take place Jan. 17-18. The annual winter tradition invites families and train enthusiasts to start off 2026 in motion through this hands-on fun event. The action-packed weekend will feature activities, special experiences and movies for train enthusiasts of all ages, while offering a chance to explore the science center’s newest and largest long-term exhibition, Sports360.
Highlights will include dozens of operating locomotives and guest train displays created by local hobbyists. Displays can be viewed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days in the PPG Science Pavilion and main lobby. The display is included with general admission. A variety of interactive train displays will showcase Pittsburgh, cinematic worlds and landscapes, some of which come to life with the touch of a button.
Visitors can experience the center’s Miniature Railroad and Village exhibition, located on the museum’s second floor. This scaled-down version of Western Pennsylvania includes landmarks such as Kaufmann’s, Forbes Field, Fallingwater, Primanti’s and Chinatown Inn. A variety of science center and local model train experts will be on hand to answer questions and share their insights.
Guests can add tickets to see the train films “Rocky Mountain Express” and “Train Time,” on the giant screen inside the Rangos Giant Cinema throughout the weekend, officials noted.
Local exhibitors who will be on hand during the event include: Fort Pitt Hi-Railers, Fort Pitt Kid’s Club, South Hills Model Railroad Club, Iron City n’ Scale, Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, Steel City LUG, Mike Kuhlman Z. Scale, Pittsburgh S. Gaugers, Esther’s Hobby Shop, Operation Lifesaver and Norfolk Southern. The Locomotion Weekend is being sponsored by Isaly’s.
The Sports360 exhibit is the newest and largest long-term exhibition at the science center and is included with general admission. The experience is located on the first floor of the museum and immerses visitors in the science of athletic performance across football, baseball, hockey, soccer, basketball and Olympic-inspired sports.
Featuring approximately 25 hands-on stations, visitors can step up to the plate at PNC Park with a batting simulator, shoot the game winning-shot against a virtual goalie, test their endurance in a mini-NFL Combine and more. The exhibit is designed for visitors of all ages and abilities, allowing everyone an opportunity to work out their body and brain, officials commented.

Gamers welcome at science center
PITTSBURGH — The Kamin Science Center is inviting gamers to grab a controller and raise a glass for the upcoming 21-Plus Night which will focus on video games. The event is set to take place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Jan. 16.
Visitors will have the opportunity to step into a gamers’ paradise. Gamers can take on challengers on the Rangos Giant Cinema’s 71-by-39-foot movie screen. Guests can power up on exclusive-themed cocktails, playtest new video game demos and enjoy the science center within a child-free zone.
The center offers five floors of interactive exhibits, along with numerous arenas of gameplay participants can join. The evening promises to offer a mix of science, friendly competition and nostalgia to ignite curiosity. Cosplay is encouraged, officials announced.
Highlights of the evening will include specialty cocktails and mocktails, gameplay on the largest movie screen in Pittsburgh and access to the center’s Sports360 exhibition. This exhibit features four interactive sport simulators, organizers of the event stated. A round of Jackbox games will be hosted by comedian Derek Minto. The evening will include listening to songs found within your favorite video games, to be performed by local band Arcadia.
The event will feature game demos which guests can playtest through the University of Pittsburgh’s Digital Narrative and Interactive Design program. Attendees will receige a sneak peek of the robotics which are being developed by Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center. Visitors can take part in various experiments that are focused on chiptunes, adrenaline and pixel art, officials commented.
