Bill Tucker among Hall of Fame inductees
WEIRTON – Among the inductees for this year’s Weirton Hall of Fame class is Weir High football standout and former NFL player William “Bill” Tucker.
Tucker is set to be inducted in the category of sports/athletics.
The Weirton Hall of Fame induction dinner will be held at 2 p.m., Aug. 28 in the Rose Room of the Millsop Community Center.
Tickets are now on sale, at a cost of $30 per person, and can be purchased at the Weirton Municipal Building, the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce and R.E. Saxon Jewelers.
Tucker attended Weir High from 1958 to 1962, joining the varsity football team in 1959 and playing on the school’s championship squads in 1960 and 1961.
During his high school career, Tucker scored 116 points, with a total of 1,445 yards. He played as running back, defensive back and defensive tackle. In the 1961 championship game, Tucker scored two touchdowns, leading Weir to a 26-7 victory over St. Albans.
He earned third team all-state honors in 1060 and first team all-state in 1961. He also was first team OVAC and voted captain of that team, completing his high school career as an All-American.
Tucker also competed on Weir’s varsity basketball team as a starting forward and center, and ran hurdles, the 220-yard dash, the quarter-mile and the 440, 880 and mile relays as part of the high school’s track team.
In August 1962, he helped lead a 12-6 win in the West Virginia-Ohio All-Star Classic, and was named most valuable player.
Tucker would attend Tennessee State University, then known as Tennessee A&I, on a football scholarship, being coached by “Big” John Merritt. From 1963 to 1966, he compiled 281 carries for 1,321 yards. He also would play in the 1967 Blue/Gray Classic and was the first player from Tennessee State to play in the Senior Bowl.
He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers, picked up in the third round as the 65th overall selection, and would play in the NFL from 1967 to 1971, the first four years with San Francisco and the final year with the Chicago Bears.
His professional career includes playing in 69 games, with 127 carries for 431 yards and six touchdowns. As a receiver, he collected 59 catches for 496 yards and seven touchdowns.
Tucker has been named to the Weir High Wall of Fame, Tennessee State University Sports Hall of Fame, a Street of Dreams Athlete from Weir Avenue and received the Dapper Dan Special Achievement Award.
He was married to Rose Livingston, and died Nov. 26, 2015.
The 2016 class of the Weirton Hall of Fame also includes Dr. Madhu Aggarwal, in the category of philanthropy; Jessica Marinea Dettore, in the category of music and fine arts; Dennis Jones, in the category of public service; Walter Larch, in the category of business; John Sorrenti Jr., in the category of sports/athletics; Judge Callie Tsapis, in the category of public service; and James T. Wares, in the category of education.
