Group hopes Fiestaware mosaic project becomes a smashing success

WEIRTON — Area residents interested in contributing to the mosaic project at Cove Commons will have an opportunity this week.

Project organizers will be on hand from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday to continue work on the project, which began last year as part of the inaugural Gate 5 Industrial Art Festival.

Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to meet at Cove Commons, located at the intersection of Main Street and Cove Road, during these times.

The mosaic is comprised of pieces of Fiestaware china, which has been donated to organizers by Homer Laughlin.

It depicts the history of the community, showcasing the fort established by John Holliday and the agrarian community of Holliday’s Cove as well as the industrial heritage of Weirton with the basic oxygen plant.

The Gate 5 Industrial Art Festival is organized by Renaissance Weirton.

The second-annual festival is planned for Sept. 21, featuring art and crafters using aspects of local industry in their work, the Tin Man 5K run/walk, live demonstrations, a recycled fashion show, music, food, activities for children and more.
