Weirton Council meeting canceled
City manager issue was lone agenda item
WEIRTON — A special meeting which had been set for tonight has been canceled.
The meeting had been set for 6 p.m. today in the council chambers of the Weirton Municipal Building, with the lone item on the agenda to consider “a resolution requesting mayor to nominate a city manager pursuant to Article III, Section 2(B) of the City of Weirton Charter.”
A notice from the city Wednesday morning announced the meeting had been canceled. It originally was announced Tuesday morning.
Article III, Section 2 B of the Weirton Charter focuses on the appointment of the city manager, and states “The City Manager shall be appointed by the Mayor with the consent and approval of the Council; all other offices mentioned in Section 2-A of this section shall be filled and appointed by the Mayor upon the recommendation of the City Manager with the consent and approval of the Council. All appointments shall be for the duration of the term of the Council or unless sooner removed as hereinafter set forth. Whenever the Mayor shall fail to make any and all appointments under him, as are required to be made by him, for a period of thirty days from the time such appointment shall have been made, after having been requested by Council by resolution so to do, such appointment may be made by the Council.
“All appointed officers, other than the City Manager, must be residents of the City of Weirton for at least one year prior to their appointment and must continue to reside in the City for the duration of their term.”
Weirton has been searching to fill the city manager position since July 12 when the former city manager announced his resignation. Assistant City Manager DeeAnn Pulliam has been serving in the capacity in the interim.
