Brooke Commission agrees to hire two courthouse security officers
WELLSBURG — Brooke County officials agreed, Tuesday, to fill two vacancies in security posts at the county courthouse.
At the request of Sheriff Richard Beatty, county commissioners approved the hiring of two security officers for the courthouse, citing recent retirements and resignations.
“We have a couple of people in mind,” Beatty said “We’ve interviewed them. We think they would be good.”
The employment would be pending the completion of background and drug screenings, it was noted by commissioners.
“It shouldn’t be a problem,” Beatty said, adding each of the new hires has previous employment with the Bureau of Prisons. “They’re 25 years in federal law enforcement.”
It was noted, while the hiring would be effective for Wednesday, the two would begin work Monday.
In related matters, Beatty asked commissioners to withdraw a previous proposal which would have made Derek Mills a full-time security employee.
In other business, Tuesday, commissioners approved the resignation of Julie Devore, effective Sept. 11, and approved the 10th draw from American Rescue Plan Act funds toward the Drover’s Inn sewage extension project, in the amount of $2,652.55.
Ben Erste, of the Brooke-Hancock-Jefferson Metropolitan Planning Commission, explained the money will go toward legal and administrative fees for the project.
Commissioners will continue reviewing options for the re-establishment of a county Planning Commission, which would work on the oversight of land use and zoning in the county.
“That’s one of the many things I want to get started before March,” said Commission President A.J. Thomas, noting a suggested deadline as a result of his plans to step down from the commission March 1.
The commission also will continue discussion on potential appointments to the county’s 911 Advisory Board, and the hiring of a part-time county radio administrator and an additional assistant county prosecutor.
