Rabies detected in Brooke County raccoon

WELLSBURG – A raccoon found in the Castleman’s Road area of Bethany has tested positive for rabies, according to the Brooke County Health Department.

Officials report the raccoon was collected by the health department on Wednesday near the Ohio County line, and submitted for testing at the state lab. A positive result for rabies was confirmed Thursday.

The Brooke County Health Department and county Animal Control are investigating any potential exposures to humans or domestic animals in relation to the raccoon, including bites, scratches, or contact with the animal’s saliva.

Health officials warn residents to keep their pets’ vaccinations up to date, and be wary of animals acting strangely or aggressively.
