School board approves coaching, bus driver postings

NEW CUMBERLAND – During Tuesday’s special meeting of the Hancock County Board of Education, members approved two coaching assignments, as well as three substitute bus drivers, but opted to table a series of bids on eight surplus buses.

The board unanimously approved the assignment of Maurice Tucker as an unpaid/volunteer assistant football coach at Weir High School, and Denise Roberts as an assistant cheerleading coach at Oak Glen High.

In addition, James Barr, Ronald D. Powell, and Jeffrey L. Roth were approved as substitute bus operators for the county school district.

All were made effective for the current school year.

The board opted to table acceptance of bids on the eight buses previously declared as surplus property.

Bids had been received for Bus 68, Bus 71, Bus 74, Bus 75, Bus 93, Bus 122, Bus 125, and Bus 138, but board President Chris Gillette asked if it was possible the school district could receive more money if it were to scrap six of the eight buses on its own, compared to the amount offered under the bid.

It was noted the six buses in question were no longer operable, while the other two could still be driven.

Gillette was told staff would check into the available options, and the item could be revisited during the board’s next regular meeting.
