Carbon monoxide blamed for deaths

STEUBENVILLE — The two Franciscan University of Steubenville students whose bodies were found outside a residence hall Monday died of carbon monoxide poisoning, the Jefferson County coroner’s office reported Tuesday.

The bodies of Luke Reimer, 20, of Indian Shores, Fla., and Mary Mich of Downington, Pa., were found shortly after noon Monday in a gray Bronco that was parked outside of the St. Agnes Residence Hall.

City police discovered the bodies after a caller requested a welfare check at the location, but deferred comment to university officials, who in a statement released today said “early indicators suggest this was a tragic accident related to a potential vehicle exhaust or engine malfunction.”

“This news brings profound sorrow to the entire Franciscan University community,” the statement continued. “Let’s hold Luke and Mary, and all who mourn them, close in prayer, asking the Lord for comfort, mercy, and peace.”

FUS has made counseling services available to all students “in their residence halls and at a central location on campus.”

“In moments such as this, the community seeks to care for one another both through gathering together and through reaching out to those who are hurting. If individuals have concerns about students or friends struggling during this difficult time, they are urged to contact a university counselor, faculty or staff member,” the statement said.
