First six months of the Mountain State comeback

When I addressed my fellow West Virginians upon taking the oath of office, I said it was the dawn of a new era. A time to set our sights on something truly great: a future where West Virginia thrives as that shining state in the mountains. We pledged to move the needle on the things that matter: lifting our standard of living, driving educational attainment, and growing our workforce, all while defending and advancing West Virginia conservative values. Promises made, promises kept. We’ve proven that West Virginia can rise. We will rise. And not only that, we are ready to lead. We ...

Let’s recommit to community

To the Editor, Every Fourth of July, we gather to celebrate what makes America strong: freedom, hard work and a sense of shared purpose. Here in Weirton, that celebration always feels a little more personal. From the parade to the fireworks, it’s a reminder of just how proud — and how connected — we are as a community. This past weekend, I was proud to see so many local organizations, businesses (including my own, Howard Hanna Mortimer Realty) and families come together for the Weirton Independence Day Parade, and later, to enjoy the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra’s performance ...

Honoring those who go above and beyond

If you checked out our front page this weekend, you will have seen that tickets for the Weirton Hall of Fame induction ceremony are now on sale. Organized by the City of Weirton, the Hall of Fame seeks to recognize current and former residents who have made significant contributions to the community or who have distinguished themselves within a specific field or career. This year’s ceremony will be held Aug. 16, with a class of eight set to be inducted. They include Daniel L. McCune in the category of philanthopy; Gabriel “Gabe” Arlia for public service; Dr. Jasbir Makar and ...

Resolution rates on informal complaints to the PSC are 98 percent

The statistic that astounds me yearly at the Public Service Commission of West Virginia is our ability to settle thousands of cases on an informal basis and without resorting to lawyers or litigation of any kind. Our most recent report shows that we received more than nine-thousand-five-hundred informal complaints last year. These types of complaints happen when you have experienced a service interruption, when the service you have is poor, when you can’t get service, or if you have a billing issue that you cannot get resolved. You want to talk with somebody about it. You have ...

We can’t be weak

To the Editor, An unpopular opinion, which I posted as a comment on social media. The person was complaining, rather bitterly, about Fourth of July fireworks causing issues for people with PTSD and other emotional problems: “I’m sorry you have this issue, and it’s not that I’m unsympathetic, but there have been many, many people with PTSD and other problems for many, many years. They just courageously dealt with July 4th, because they realized they were in the minority, and didn’t expect everyone else to kowtow to their own, personal issues. “So, they — considerately, ...

How many hoops must we jump through?

What happened in Texas on July 4 was unfathomable. Flash flooding and its aftermath took the lives of —at this writing — approximately 120 people. Families and communities are devastated. Help from all corners is still desperately needed. And it is coming, even from the federal government, which rightly wasted NO time in quickly delivering a robust response. President Donald Trump approved Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s request for a major disaster declaration only one day after it was submitted. That activated Federal Emergency Management Agency resources and help for survivors and ...
