Red Riders get a DH sweep of the Panthers

WEIRTON — While a lot of teams had to stay home on Saturday due to the weather, the Weir High softball team spent its day collecting a couple of victories.

The Red Riders hosted Buckeye Local, who was making its season debut, in a doubleheader and won both games, 15-0 and 10-2.

In the first game, Phia Aperfine went 4 for 4 and finished with seven RBIs, inlcuding hitting the first home run in the Red Riders new ballpark.

Brayley Lash had three hits and an RBI, including a double, Reagan Hoover had a pair of singles and two RBIs and Rayna Hoover tallied three RBIs in the opener.

Eliza Utt pitched a one-hit shutout with six strikeouts.

Buckeye Local’s lone hit came from Josey Meddles.

In the second game, Rayna Hoover, Elle Maley and Riley Donaldson each drove in a pair of runs, Donaldson having a double as well, while Utt and Aperfine also had RBIs.

Donaldson got the win in the circle for Weir High, fanning five while both runs allowed were unearned.

Samantha Ankrom had an RBI for the Panthers, while Adison Muldrew doubled.

The Red Riders host Big Red today.

Madonna wins a pair

MORGANTOWN — The Madonna softball team swept a doubleheader on Saturday at Morgantown Trinity Christian.

Kendal Ryan pitched both games, striking out six while throwing a no-hitter in the opener and again fanning six in the second game.

At the plate, she had a double and a triple in the first game and single and a triple in the second.

Ally Laughlin had a single and a triple in the opening game and had a single and an inside-the-park homer in the second game.

Mia Pietranton and Ella Wingett each had three hits in the first game and Pietranton, Chloe Orecchio and Carmela Pulice each had a pair of hits in the second game.

Madonna hosts Cameron today at the Franciscan University of Steubenville softball field.

Oak Glen drops two tough games

MORGANTOWN — Oak Glen suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of University on Saturday.

The Golden Bears dropped the first game 6-4 as the Hawks walked off with a three-run homer.

In the second game, Oak Glen lost 10-9 in 10 innings.

In the first game, Sydney Brown had a solo homer and Lizzie Kell had two hits and an RBI while striking out 11 in the circle.

In the secomd game, Olivia Munoz homered and had three RBIs, while Sydney and Sarah Brown each had two hits, Sarah Brown having a double and driving in two runs.

Maddie Murray also doubled and fanned eight in the 10-inning effort in the circle.

The Golden Bears look for their first win of the season today against East Liverpool.

BASEBALL

Toronto tops Frontier

TORONTO — The Toronto baseball team’s bats got off to a hot start to the season, scoring 19 runs and pounding out 21 hits in a 19-9 win over visiting Frontier.

Dom Bouscher tallied two doubles, three hits and four RBIs, Zeb Kinsey homered and had a pair of RBIs and Zane Kinsey had three hits and two RBIs.

The Red Knights host Monroe Central on Tuesday.

TENNIS

Weir sweeps Fairmont Senior

FARMINGTON — The Weir High tennis team both won matches at North Marion on Saturday.

The boys team won all six matches that were contested, while the girls team was a perfect 7-0.

Megan Dunmyer, Kayla Velogal, Jenna Costello and Kayla Mazon won girls singles matches and the combos of Dunmyer/Velogal, Costello/Mazon and Allison Best/Mia Hawthorne won in doubles.

On the boys side, Justin Velogal, Niko Dimitriou, Ty Lyon and Mikey Lyte won singles matches, while Velogal/Dimitriou and Lyon/Lytle combined to win doubles matches.

Fairmont Senior won the third doubles by default.

Weir High returns home today to host Wheeling Park.
