Weir High takes first meeting with Oak Glen
WEIRTON — The Weir High softball team jumped on Oak Glen early and did not look back, taking the first meeting with county rival Oak Glen, 6-2, Wednesday evening at the Roberta “Birdie” DeFrancis softball field.
The Red Riders, now 5-0, pushed across three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead, tacked on another in the fourth and two more in the fifth to open a 6-0 lead before the Golden Bears plated a pair in the top of the seventh.
Rayna Hoover blasted a homer and drove in a pair of runs, while Elle Maley had a double, single and an RBI, Brayley Lash had a double and a single and Jaidyn Kelly doubled in a run.
Eliza Utt went the distance in the circle, striking out six and walking just two.
For Oak Glen, now 6-2, Wright had a two-run homer to provide the Bears’ offense.
Mattie Carney had five strikeouts in two innings of relief work.
Creek tops Ferry
WINTERSVILLE — The Indian Creek softball team bounced back to even its record by topping visiting Martins Ferry, 7-2, at home on Wednesday evening.
The game was originally scheduled to be played in Martins Ferry but shifted to Creek.
Emma Vok had a double, triple and two RBIs to lead the Redskins, while Kaitlyn Dorsey also drove in two runs with a pair of base knocks and Trinity Taylor and Erika Gibbons also plated a run each.
Taylor went the distance in the circle, striking out nine with just one walk.
BASEBALL
Toronto wins big
CANTON — The Toronto baseball team won by a lopsided score for the third time in three outings Wednesday, this time topping Youngstown East on the road, 16-0, in five innings.
Blake Close (six strikeouts) and Aiden Filby (two strikeouts) combined on the mound for the Red Knights’ second-straight no hitter.
Drake Bouscher doubled and had four RBIs, while Nolan Dickinson and Caden McGrath each drove in a run with a base knock.
