Wheeling Park holds off Weir High

WEIRTON — The Weir baseball team fell behind early against Wheeling Park, and the Patriots were able to withstand a Red Rider rally.

Wheeling Park led 7-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, however, Weir answered with five runs in the next two innings to cut its deficit down to one run. The Patriots, however, regrouped and plated three runs in the sixth to pull away for a 10-6 victory in six innings on a rainy Tuesday evening up at the Weir High Baseball Field.

The Red Riders only collected two hits in the game, but they were able to take advantage of 11 Wheeling Park walks and an error to produce their six runs.

Wheeling Park produced eight hits en route to the win.

The visitors from Ohio County used four pitchers in the game.

Rocco Digiandomenico recorded the win for the Patriots. He pitched the first three innings, striking out three and walking four. He was relieved by Erik Blazier, who did not record an out. Blazier did not record a strikeout, while walking four. Blazier was lifted for Mason Charlton. Charlton pitched the next 1 2/3 innings, striking out one and walking two. Charlton was replaced by Coldin Burkhart, who pitched the final 1 1/3 innings. He did not record a strikeout, while walking one.

The hosts used two pitchers.

Evan Kaczmarek started and took the loss. He struck out two and walked five in 1 2/3 innings of work. He was replaced by Cayden Braswell, who pitched the final 4 1/3 innings. Braswell struck out five and walked four.

The Patriots plated a run in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead before tacking on five more in the second to increase their advantage to 6-0.

The Patriots made good contact with the ball in the less than ideal weather conditions.

Individually, Rocco Digiandomenico collected two singles and two RBI, Miles Gorby chipped in with two singles and an RBI and Jaxson Updegraff and Nolan Yanchack each ended up with a single and two RBI. Also, Nate Simon tallied a double and an RBI, Koleton Whitmire contributed a single and Ryland Robb recorded an RBI.

Both of Weir’s hits were singles.

Individually, Teddy Glyptis and Lucas McAllister each tallied a single and an RBI, and Aleks Zanieski and Braswell each collected an RBI.

The Red and Black came back with a run in the home half of the inning to make it a 6-1 ballgame. Wheeling Park produced a run in the fourth to regain a six-run advantage at 7-1. The Red Riders refused to go away quietly as the hosts scored four runs in the bottom half of the inning to pull within 7-5 before tacking on another run in the fifth to cut their deficit to one run at 7-6.

The win enabled Wheeling Park to sweep the season series from Weir. The Patriots defeated the Red Riders, 13-3, April 10 down in Wheeling.

Weir is scheduled to play Clay-Battelle at 5 p.m. today on the road. The Red Riders defeated the Cee-Bees, 17-2, March 27 at home.

Wheeling Park is slated to play St. Clairsville at 5 p.m. Thursday on the road. The Red Devils defeated the Patriots, 6-3, April 15 on the road.
