Brooke looks to keep recent momentum in home finale
WELLSBURG — The Brooke football team has made quite the turnaround.
After dropping the first two games of the season, the Bruins have now won three of their last four to even up their record at 3-3 and put themselves in the hunt for a playoff spot in West Virginia Class AAA.
The latest victory was a hard-fought 21-20 win over East Liverpool last Friday night at Brooke Memorial Stadium.
In that win, all-three phases of the game contributed for Brooke as they scored on a blocked kick and a kick return as well as a long run on offense.
Grant Yost had four catches and an 84-yard kick return for a score, while Ty Sperringer threw for 139 yards and Cory Maynard broke a 49-yard TD run and led the team in rushing.
This week, the Bruins have their final home game of the season as they welcome Frankfort to Brooke County for a 7 p.m. Friday night clash on senior night.
The Falcons will be quite the challenge for the Bruins, as they make the trip from Ridgely with a 6-0 record and are ranked No. 2 in the Class AA standings.
Frankfort’s victories have come over Morefield and North Garret on the road and at home over Hampshire, Allegany, Tucker County and Mountain Ridge.
The Falcons average 40.5 points per game and allow just an average of 9.8 points.
Brooke is averaging 15.7 points for and 23.8 against on the season, but are scoring an average of 23.5 and allowing 18.8 in the last four games.
On the season, Sperringer has 729 yards with six touchdowns and nine picks, adding another score rushing.
Michael Gibson leads the team in rushing with 266 yards and a score, averaging 5.3 yards per carry.
Yost is the top pass catcher with 19 grabs for 315 yards and two scores, averaging 16.6 yards per catch.
Maynard leads the defense with 41 tackles and two sacks, while Marcus Reed has three sacks and two forced fumbles and Cole Bolen has six tackles for loss.
The surge by the Bruins has moved them into 19th place in the latest Class AAA rankings, with the top 16 set to make the playoffs.
After this week, the Bruins have trips to John Marshall, Elkins and Weir High to close the regular season.
