Weir wins Hancock County Cup

NEW CUMBERLAND — The Weir High golf team topped its county foes to close the regular season on Thursday.

The Red Riders won the inaugural Hancock County Cup event at Woodview.

They shot a team score of 148, defeating Oak Glen (183) and Madonna (235).

Guy Meneely was the match medalist with a one-under-par score of 35, while Aiden Ferguson tallied a 37 and Isaiah Smith and Evan Kaczmarek each shot 38.

For Oak Glen, Gannon Cline carded a 42, while Maddox Chaffin carded a 45, Zach Jenkins a 47 and Jack Cline a 49.

Madonna got a 47 from Xavier Taylor, Thomas Welch fired a 50, Sophia Quattrochi had 60 and Luke Mulder had a 72.

The Red Riders finish the regular season with a dual record of 29-9.

Weir and Oak Glen compete in the WVSSAC Class AA segional tournament at Moundsville Country Club on Monday, while Madonna competes in the Class A regional at Mingo Bottom.

Park tops end of season event

WELLSBURG — The Wheeling Park girls golf Team moved up from the novice to the championship division in their second year to win the West Virginia Girls Golf End of Season Team Tournament held at Highland Springs Golf Course in Wellsburg on Thursday. 

Park was led by sophomore Abby Thomas with a 93.

The match played at a college length of 5,700 yards. 

The first year team from Fairmont Senior finished second with 328 followed by Brooke and Wheeling Central.  Tyler, John Marshall and University did not have the three players minimum to have a full team score. 

The medalist competition came down to a showdown by juniors Abby Kingora of University HIgh School and Kianna Garrison of John Marshall. Garrison took a one stroke lead on the first hole and the players then matched scores for 15 holes.  Kingora birdied the 17th hole to throw the match into a tie. Garrison then edged Kingora on the par five 18th hole by one shot shooting 88 to earn medalist honors.   

Brooke got a 109 from Ellie McDonald, a 113 from Sophia Wilkerson and a 118 from Grace Shepherd.

GIRLS SOCCER

Central tops Creek

STEUBENVILLE — The Catholic Central girls soccer tram defeated Indian Creek on Thursday, 9-2.

Lily Krivoniak recorded three goals to lead the way, while Zoe Wise scored twice. Julia Kuebler, Lynn Cai and Mary Rohde also netted a goal each.

VOLLEYBALL

Madonna wins two

WEIRTON — The Madonna volleyball team swept its regional seeding tri-match on Thursday evening, topping Valley 25-11, 25-13 and Magnolia 27-25, 25-11.

Sophie Brady had a combined six kills, three aces, four blocks, 36 assists, and nine digs, Geena Birkhimer registered 15 kills and six digs, Rylee Birkhimer had 13 kills and 15 digs and Madi Owens had 14 kills , two aces and 18 digs

The Blue Dons have earned the No. 2 seed in next week’s OVAC tournament and host Heartland Christian in the semis on Tuesday.

Central tops Edison

RICHMOND — The Catholic Central volleyball team defeated Edison on Thursday evening, 30-28, 28-26, 22-25, 27-25.

Both teams will have OVAC consolation matches next week before tournament play.

WEDNESDAY

Oak Glen tops East Liverpool

EAST LIVERPOOL — Averi Martin and Brayley Lash each had 15 kills in leading Oak Glen past East Liverpool, 25-22, 18-25, 25-15, 25-15, Wednesday at the Potter Fieldhouse.

Oak Glen improves to 19-7-3, while East Liverpool lost for the third time in five matches to move to 13-6.

Brooklyn Six also had 11 kills and six aces for the Golden Bears. Haylee Stewart contributed eight kills and Mikalyn Balch made 38 assists. Keira Vick had 15 digs, Kendall Six seven digs and Ellie Smith four digs.

Ava Green totaled three aces, 14 kills and four blocks and Kendall Martin had five aces, two kills and 19 assists for the Potters. Presley Jones collected five kills and four blocks, Addie Jones three kills and two blocks Hailey Board two kills and five blocks, Ayla Riggle two assists and 17 digs and Lillie White two aces and one kill.

Edison girls finish season

CAMBRIDGE — The Edison girls golf team placed fourth in the district tournament at Cambridge Country Club with a score of 407 to end its season. .

Kallie McKeegan fired a 84 to lead the way.
