Big Red boys get another big win
LOUISVILLE — The Big Red boys basketball team went on the road Friday to St. Thomas Aquinas and added another lopsided victory to its total, defeating the Knights, 83-28.
The victory is Big Red’s eighth in a row and lifts them to 13-1 on the season.
Steubenville opened a 30-5 lead after one and led 51-11 at halftime.
OVAC leading scorer Santino Haney netted 24 points and five rebounds, while Cole Bowers hit three treys and finished with 22 points and four boards. Tre Wiggins knocked down four 3s to finish with 12 points.
Big Red is scheduled to host St. Clairsville on Tuesday.
Crusaders hold off Rosecrans
STEUBENVILLE — The Catholic Central boys basketball team made it back to back wins, holding off visiting Bishop Rosecrans for a 55-53 victory on Friday night at home.
After trailing 12-10 after one and 29-28 at halftime, Central netted 19 points in the third to take a 47-39 lead to the fourth and held on to win.
Rahim Mitchell netted a game-high 19 points for the Crusaders (7-9), while Kolbe Krupp tallied 11 and Michael Fabbro and Robbie Cherepko each netted eight points.
The Crusaders are scheduled to travel to Harrison Central on Tuesday.
Madonna gets a win
PINE GROVE — The Madonna boys basketball team got back in the win column Friday night, ending a nine-game slide with a 62-57 road win at Valley.
The Blue Dons (2-13) were led by 19 points from Reno Fuscardo, 18 from Jake Druga and 12 from Luke Wingett.
The Blue Dons host Oak Glen on Thursday.
Panthers top Bellaire
ST. CLAIRSVILLE –The Buckeye Local boys basketball team avenged an opening night loss to Bellaire by defeating the Big Reds Friday night in the Buckeye 8 Conference consolation round, 56-47 inside the ECO Center.
The Panthers (5-12) got 13 points each from Jusante Wright and Hayden Wilhelm, while Rylan Walker netted 11 and Matt Morris 10 to put four in double figures.
The Panthers host Bridgport on Tuesday.
Huskies fall to Rocks
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Barnesville Shamrocks topped the Harrison Central Huskies 49-43, Friday inside the ECO Center in Buckeye 8 consolation action.
Bryson Kamarec had 14 points to lead Harrison Central.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Weir tops Buckeye Local
CONNORVILLE — The Weir High girls basketball team ended its losing streak and got back in the win column with a strong 62-25 victory over Buckeye Local on the road on Friday night.
The Red Riders (2-13) opened a 17-2 lead after one and did not look back.
Ryann Jeter netted a game-high 20 points, while Gianna Siegal tallied 19 and Lili Ascencio 12.
Buckeye Local (2-16) was led by seven from Sammi Westfall.
Weir is slated to host Catholic Central on Monday, weather permitting.
Buckeye Local goes to River Jan. 31.
