Madonna stays undefeated sweeping twinbill

WETZEL — The Madonna softball team has ran its undefeated start to the season to 7-0.

The Blue Dons added the two most recent wins to that total by going on the road and sweeping a twinbill at Valley, 10-2 and 12-3, both games ending an inning early due to the run rule.

In the opener, Madi Owens went 3 for 4 with a pair of homer and five RBIs, while Peyton Conley was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Kendall Ryan, Breea Birkhimer and Taylor Birkhimer each plated a run.

Ryan went the distance in the circle with four strikeouts and one walk for her 40th career victory.

In game two, Owens completed a monster day with another homer, a triple and three more RBIs to finish the day 5 of 6 with three homers, a triple, a double and eight RBIs.

Ryan doubled, singled and plated three runs, Conley went 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs and Tina Littleton drove in three runs.

Conley struck out nine without issuing a walk in the circle.

The Blue Dons visit Indian Creek tonight.

Oak Glen wins two

SISTERSVILLE — The Oak Glen softball team got above .500 on the season with a pair of victories in a twinbill at Tyler on Saturday, winning both games by 18-0 scores in five innings by the run rule.

In the first game, Brayley Lash had two doubles, a triple and five RBIs, while Kylie Robinson had a double, single and three RBIs and Mattie Carney doubled, had three hits and two RBIs while tossing a four-inning perfect game with six strikeouts and no walks in the circle.

In game two, Carney ripped two doubles and drove in two runs, Naveah Heath drove in two runs, Bella Hodor drove in two runs and Danica Holden doubled and drove in three runs while also firing a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks in four innings.

Tyler’s only base runner on the day was via Oak Glen’s only error.

The Bears are home today against Wheeling Central.

BASEBALL

Toronto opens with a win

TORONTO — The Toronto baseball team started its season with a 10-2 victory at home at the KBC on Saturday afternoon over visiting Mineral Ridge.

The Red Knights got a double and two RBIs from Chase Heckathorn and a single and an RBI each from Michael Henry and Gunnar Newbold.

On the mound, Drake Bouscher went five innings and struck out five and walked two for the win, while Henry tossed the final two innings.

Toronto hosts East Liverpool today in its MS Awareness Day game.

Blue Dons win in extras to go to 3-0

WOODSFIELD — The Madonna baseball team won a thriller on Saturday to stay undefeated, topping Monroe Central on the road in nine innings.

After the game was deadlocked a 2-2 through seven and neither team scored in the eigth, the Blue Dons plated a pair of runs in the top of the ninth and held the Seminoles to one in the bottom half to hang on.

Reno Fuscardo had two hits and an RBI while Tyler Dillon and Evan Kaczmarek also drove in a run each.

Kaczmarek went the first five innings on the mound, striking out seven and walking five, while Sam Brooks went the next inning with a pair of punchouts and Jacob Lazear fired the last three innings, striking out six and walking two in earning the win in relief.

Madonna had its homer opener today hosting Magnolia.

BASKETBALL

District 5 ASG held

CADIZ — Locals competed in the annual District 5 All-Star Game at Harrison Central on Sunday.

The East team, which contained local players, won both the boys and girls games.

On the boys side, the East won 106-82. They were coached by Toronto’s Sean Tucker and Big Red’s Cole Bowers was game MVP with 19 points.

Toronto’s Austin Buchanan had 18, Harrison Central’s Bryson Kamrec 16, Indian Creek’s Nishon White 15, Big Red’s Tre Wiggins 10 and Edison’s Bryce Rodgers 8.

The girls East team, coached by Edison’s Mark Smyth and Big Red’s Angie Forte, won 56-47, led by game MVP Nylah McShan of Big Red with 21 points

Edison Sophia Henderson had nine points, Creek’s Riley Sadler had seven, Big Red’s Bailee Beall six, Central’s Mary Rohde four and Creek’s Gabby Taylor one while Harrison Central’s Kara Blackburn was also on the winning team.
