FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Creek beats Bellaire to move to 6-0 for first time since 1997

WINTERSVILLE — The historic season for Indian Creek continues.

The Redskins out-scored Bellaire for a 52-32 victory Friday night at Kettlewell Memorial Stadium to improve to 6-0 for the first time since 1997. Creek won its first nine games that season.

Creek rushed for 266 yards and six TDs as a team, Bruce Mazar, Ian Starkey and Gavin Pownall each rushing for two scores.

Starkey threw for 149 yards and a score in going 9 of 15 passing while rushing for 131 yards on 12 carries. He had scoring runs of 1 and 9 yards and threw a 16-yard score to Ethan Starr (five catches, 73 yards).

Mazar also topped the century mark with 108 yards on 13 totes, adding another 49 yards on two catches. Pownall added 27 yards rushing and 15 receiving.

Mazar’s scoring runs covered 4 and 7 yards, while Pownall converted on runs of 3 and 4 yards.

Bellaire (3-3) got 151 rushing yards on 20 carries and two scores from Rylin McMahon. Michael Dippel threw for 174 and two scores with a pick in going 16 of 37 for the Big Reds.

Creek held a narrow 13-12 lead after one and pulled away in the second quarter to lead 29-18 at the break.

They pushed the lead to 45-24 after three.

The 52 points was a season-high for the Redskins. Joe Eitel’s unofficial rankings had Creek moving up to No. 3 in Division IV, Region 15 as of Friday night.

Creek goes on the road next week out to Cadiz to take on Harrison Central (2-4) next Friday. Bellaire hosts St. Clairsville (4-2) next Saturday afternoon.

Brooke rolls to second win

WELLSBURG — The Brooke football team had a big win on the night it celebrated the 40th anniversary of the 1985 championship team, rolling to a 35-0 blanking of visiting Lincoln County on Paul “Bud” Billiard Field inside Brooke Memorial Stadium.

The win improved coach Frank Sisinni’s Bruins to 2-3 and gave them their first home win of the season. It’s their second win in the last three games.

Ty Sperringer threw for a pair of TDs, while Grant Yost caught a touchdown. Michael Gibson ran for a long score in the win.

Brooke’s 35 points were a season high for the Bruins offense.

Brooke is back at home next Friday night to host East Liverpool (2-4).
