Telling whoppers: A woman claimed she was assaulted by her ex-boyfriend, Saturday. She told police he "shoved her into an 'object' head-first along state Route 7" and she fell and lost consciousness in a wooded area next to the roadway. Police noted neither they or Steubenville EMS were able to locate any injuries to her head or face and when they pointed out there was no dirt or mud on her clothing as would be expected given weather conditions, they said she then told them she'd "already changed her clothing" before they arrived on scene, but a bystander told police the woman had changed her clothes before the encounter with her ex. Police told the woman that, "given that she was not injured in any way ... (there would be) no further investigation," so then she told them she wanted to go to the hospital.
Phone fight: A woman at a South Court Street location didn't want to pursue charges but told police her "significant other" hit her in the face with a purse, Saturday. She said they'd been arguing over her phone and he broke hers, so she broke his. She had no visible injuries but asked police to speak with the male. Police said he was "cordial" but did not offer much in the way of details about what had happened so they told him she didn't want to pursue charges but if it happens again he'd likely be charged. Minutes later, she called police a second time to complain he wouldn't let her in her home. When they arrived, police said she had several chances to go in the residence but chose instead to argue with her live-in's mother. Police separated the two women after witnessing the younger woman "acting as though she were preparing to make some sort of physical advance" on the older woman. They said she wanted the cell phone she'd told police earlier had been destroyed.
Shadow boxing: A man in the 400 block of South Sixth Street claimed he was assaulted by three men earlier in the day, Friday. He said he heard "some sort of noise" outside his home and when he went out to investigate claimed he found three men wearing face masks, and when he confronted them they "immediately became defensive ... and began 'taking swings' at him." He claimed they struggled briefly before the three masked attackers fled the property.
Story time: A Ridge Avenue man told police his significant other was being held against her will at a Lincoln Avenue location, repeating a claim he'd made previously that police said was unfounded. The female advised it was "completely false and nothing of the sort was taking place." She said the man is "simply upset that she will not leave her mother's residence to be with him."
Upsetting the applecart: A caller complained of a man in the 2500 block of Sunset Boulevard "screaming and ranting" inside an apartment, Friday. While waiting to talk with the complainant police said other residents spoke to the male, who they said had been heard for the "past several nights ... screaming and swearing and blasting loud music at all hours of the night and fighting with his girlfriend." The man causing the problems isn't a tenant, neighbors said. Another said it sounded as if he was fighting with his girlfriend and recorded it, with police reporting they could hear the man "screaming profanities and slurs and threatening to kill someone if the person he was talking to continued" to refer to him using derogatory language. Police said the male continued being loud until they knocked on the apartment door, at which point he suddenly got quiet.
Grab 'n go: A Prospect Avenue resident said he left his iPhone 16 Pro on his porch while he ran into his house and when he came outside discovered it missing, along with a family member who had been visiting, Saturday. He said he tracked the phone to the ECO bank machine at Kroger. He told police he wants to pursue charges.
Street view: A woman said she thinks she's being harassed because she was at her kid's practice on Fourth Street when she saw one of his friends "outside of a bar the next street up" Friday. She said she saw her ex in the area after that.
Attention getting: A South Fourth Street resident claimed her boyfriend was suicidal, but when police located him at his home they said he was "in high spirits," Friday. He told police all was well and said the woman "was psychotic." He said they "have issues and he suspects she will continue calling ... police." Police said he gave no indication of wanting to harm himself or others.
Inattentive dad: A child in the 100 block of Greenwich Avenue called 9-1-1 again, Friday. The child's father said again he didn't know anyone had called.
Silly: A woman who reported a disturbance at a Ross Street location told police a woman wanted to fight her because she'd gone out with a friend of hers without the woman, Saturday. She said the other woman left when she called police. She asked police to tell the other woman to stay away from her, but police couldn't locate her.
In custody: Chad Keyser, 35, 3305 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville, negligent homicide/vehicular manslaughter, Saturday. Keyser had been indicted in Brooke County in November for allegedly driving under the influence causing a death and negligent homicide in connection with a May 3 accident that left his female passenger, Christine Michelle Shannon, dead. Authorities believe Keyser was under the influence of a controlled substance when his vehicle crossed multiple lanes of traffic and crashed into a support pole for a traffic light on state Route 2 in Follansbee.
