Man sentenced in fracturing of 7-month-old’s leg
STEUBENVILLE — A man the Jefferson County sheriff’s department said was responsible for a leg fracture of a 7-month-old child was sentenced in county Common Pleas Court on Monday.
David M. Mantegna, 27, of 5393 county Road 43, Steubenville, pleaded guilty to a charge of endangering children and was sentenced by Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr. to six months in the Eastern Ohio Correction Center.
Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said Mantegna was responsible for the spiral leg fracture in a 7-month-old child. The sheriff said Mantegna spun the child in the air “like an airplane,” which resulted in the leg fracture on July 15.
Mantegna will be on probation for two years. He faces up to three years in prison if he violates probation.
Daniel D. Karas, 31, of 124 Parr Ave., Mingo Junction, was sentenced to nine months in prison by Bruzzese after Karas pleaded guilty to trafficking in heroin and possession of heroin. The county prosecutor’s office reported Karas has prior felony drug convictions.
Donald E. Siegman, 33, of 937 Broadway Blvd. was sentenced to six months in the Eastern Ohio Correction Center by Judge Michelle Miller after Siegman pleaded guilty to burglary and theft. Siegman was charged along with two codefendants of entering a home on Connie Street in Alikanna on Oct. 6 and taking cash.
Siegman will be on probation for three years, during which time he must make restitution to the victim in the amount of $3,000. He faces three years in prison if he violates probation. Miller said Siegman must do 80 hours of community service.
Raekwon Williams, 20, of 940 Sherman Ave. was placed on three years of probation by Miller after Williams pleaded guilty to three counts of heroin trafficking, each with a school specification. Williams sold heroin three times in a controlled buy on Jan. 6 and Jan. 10.
Williams, who has no prior criminal record, faces 12 months in prison if he violates probation. The judge ordered $760 found on Williams during his arrest by forfeited to the county drug task force. Williams also must do 80 hours of community service.
Myles Thorn, 23, of 441 S. Fourth St. was sentenced to two years of probation by Bruzzese after Thorn pleaded guilty to improper transportation of a firearm in a motor vehicle and trafficking in marijuana.
Thorn was arrested Feb. 21 by the county’s drug task force and Steubenville Police in possession of a large amount of marijuana.
The drug task force stopped Thorn’s vehicle at Adams and South Eighth streets and found one-half pound of marijuana and a loaded firearm.
Thorn was ordered to forfeit $960 and the firearm to the county drug task force. He faces 30 months in prison if he violates probation.
The case was brought as a bill of information to common pleas court in two weeks from municipal court by county Assistant Prosecutor Stephen Lamatrice, who also serves in municipal court. Lamatrice now has brought more than 40 bills of information directly from municipal court to common pleas court since being named an assistant prosecutor in June 2015.
