Hancock County Schools successful with vaccine clinics for employees

WEIRTON — Hancock County Schools have provided COVID-19 vaccines for all of its employees who registered, according to the county schools superintendent.

Superintendent Dawn Petrovich made the announcement Monday, during the regular meeting of the Hancock County Board of Education.

“We’ve given vaccinations to 100 percent of those who wanted it,” Petrovich said, noting the numbers accounted for approximately 60 percent of county schools employees.

The next step, she said, is the county has received clearance to offer the vaccine to immediate family members of school employees. Petrovich said there have been around 100 individuals register, and those vaccines are expected to be available sometime this week.

Hancock County Schools began offering the vaccines to employees through a series of clinics in January, working with the county health department and also offering school nurses and the LPN students from the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center to operate the clinics.

“Everybody has worked hard,” Petrovich said. “We appreciate all they’ve done.”

School Board President Dan Kaser also expressed his appreciation, saying he feels without the work provided by the school nurses and LPN students, Hancock County wouldn’t have been able to vaccinate as many residents as it has.

Also during Monday’s meeting, the board recognized its 2020 county Teacher of the Year recipient and nominees, as well as the 2020 Service Personnel of the Year recipient.

Jessica Little of A.T. Allison Elementary was named 2020 Teacher of the Year. Other nominees were Megan White of New Manchester Elementary, Monica Martich of Weirton Elementary, Amanda Schey of Weir Middle School, Carrie Gillette of Weir High School, Anna Mastrantoni of Oak Glen Middle, Brandy Smith of Oak Glen High and Steve Shannon of the Rockefeller Career Center.

Cecelia Clark of New Manchester Elementary was named 2020 Service Personnel of the Year.
