New Cumberland River Fest a sure sign of fall

File photo START OF THE SEASON – Area residents will celebrate the season next weekend with the New Cumberland Fall Riverfest, set for Sept. 27-28 along River Avenue.
NEW CUMBERLAND — The autumn season is fast approaching, which means festival time in New Cumberland.
The annual New Cumberland Fall River Fest will be held Sept. 27-28, with a variety of activities for residents and visitors.
It all kicks off at 9 a.m., Sept. 27 with the River Fest 5K Walk/Run, set to benefit the Oak Glen High School Physical Education Department.
Race day registration will be held from 8 a.m. until the time of the race, with a course beginning at Hines Park Gazebo, going south along Route 2 to the New Cumberland Baseball Fields, and returning to Magic Tree Garden.
There is a $25 registration fee to participate.
The festival itself will get under way at 11 a.m., with the opening ceremony at the pavilion on River Avenue, featuring a welcome from Mayor Will White, a color guard from Boy Scout Troop 38 and a performance by the Oak Glen High School Marching Band.
Dozens of local vendors will be on hand, with an entertainment lineup to include Jim Hallisey at noon, Matt Van Fossen from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Poor Man’s Heaven from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Full Circle from 6:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. on Sept. 27, with the Little Miss New Cumberland Pageant at 1:00 p.m. Sept. 28, and a performance by the Mad River Men at 2 p.m. to wrap up the activities.
A fireworks display also is planned for Sept. 27, with a scheduled 8:15 p.m. start.
The Riverfest Car Show, organized by Jim Ewing, will be featured from noon to 3 p.m., Sept. 27, with participating cars lined up in the field next to the New Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department.
In addition, throughout the weekend, the Riverfest Art Show will feature the work of local artists. The show is an opportunity for young artists, from kindergarten through the 12th grade, to showcasetheir talents, entered by grade and judged in the categories of painting, drawing, and photgraphy/graphics art.
Adult artists also may showcase their work.
Artwork will be on display both days of the festival.
