Traffic Commission discusses no parking request

WEIRTON — The city’s Traffic Commission is asking for more information before formally acting on a request from a member of City Council to establish a no parking area in one residential neighborhood.

Meeting Wednesday morning, the commission reviewed a request submitted by Ward 6 Councilman Anthony Rocchio for the establishment of a yellow line on Spruce Street, across from the end of School Street.

Commissioner Fred Marsh explained he and Commissioner Bill Visnic met with Rocchio Sunday to discuss the proposal.

“We didn’t know how big of a line he wanted,” Marsh said, explaining the issue appears to surround residents parking their vehicles on-street directly across from the opening of School Street.

Marsh suggested the possibility of establishing the no parking area for a distance of 20 feet, in either direction, from the center of School Street; however, it was noted there was a no parking area already established in front of a nearby mailbox and it would make more sense to connect the two areas.

Another option, from Marsh, would be to install a guardrail.

“Public Works wouldn’t like it,” Marsh said.

Rocchio, who joined the meeting after passing by council chambers while addressing other city business, said the request was the result of a “safety concern,” in particular during the winter months when ice could form on the roadways.

“A couple of neighbors have complained,” he said. “I’ve even slid across.”

Rocchio, though, said he had not spoken with the residents who park at the area in question.

Commissioners requested Rocchio to speak to those residents.

“I would feel a lot better if he had talked with the resident,” Commission Chair Romie Castelli said.

It was noted the residence in question does have a driveway and garage available to it, with access from Sellitti Lane.

Commissioner Douglas Branham moved to deny the request pending information from those discussions.
