Sudvary, Matthews gain Buckeye Local contract renewals
DILLONVALE — Buckeye Local School administrators and educators gained contract renewals during the regular school board session on Monday, with district Superintendent Coy Sudvary and Treasurer Merri Matthews topping the list.
Sudvary, who is currently in his third year leading the district, received a five-year contract which extends his term from Aug. 1, 2027, to July 31, 2032.
“I’m very grateful for the support from the board and the opportunity to continue working together with our dedicated staff. We will continue to work to provide the best opportunities for the students in our district,” he added, saying he will eventually wind down his career in education. “I appreciate the support and am looking forward to continuing employment at Buckeye Local and potentially retiring from the district.”
Matthews, who has served Buckeye Local Schools since 2003, earned a one-year extension through July 31, 2028, as she also leans toward retirement. She said no official timeline has been given for her departure but it is not too far in the future.
“I’m happy,” she said. “It’s been a pleasure working here, but it will be time to retire.”
Board President Ashley West was equally appreciative of their service and hoped to see it continue.
We are very pleased with the contracts and look forward to more years to come with them,” West added.
More personnel contracts were approved during the session, including administrative pacts for speech therapist Whitney Ashcraft for three years and Buckeye Local Jr. High Principal Andy Long and mental health professional Andrea Halicky for two years.
Resolutions were also passed to approve Brianne Nidle, assistant treasurer payroll, for two years; and limited teacher contracts for Daniel Davis, five years; Cameron Best, three years; and Tyler Blanco, Christopher DiCenzo and Isaac Rine, one year each at BLHS; Katelin Rogers and Kristina Williams, three years at BLJHS; Heather Keenan and Melissa Kendle, three years, and Rebecca Skipper, one year, Buckeye North Elementary; Hailee Nelson, one year at Buckeye North, South and West Elementary; Clint Chevalier, Marianne Clark, Lauren DeFilippo, Karen Eddy, and Erika Harvey, five years, and Rachael Scott, three years, at South; and Jennifer Blackburn, five years, and Kobe Hill and Karleigh McCardle, one year, at West. A two-year classified contract was also given to Nancy Carpenter, cook at BLJHS/BLHS, with one-year deals also given to licensed practical nurse Jacqueline Miller and nurse assistant Alexis Orban.
Meanwhile, the board hired Hayden Daley as BLHS football coach with supplemental duties as spring weightlifting coordinator with Chris DiCenzo named as assistant boys’ track coach. A pupil activity contract was also approved for Carson Basich as assistant baseball coach at BLJHS and Arielle Orban and Sandra Holyak were named as substitute educational aides.
The board also approved a series of resignations from current staff, including BLHS Guidance Counselor Jami Cammer, who will retire after 36 years of service on June 30; custodian Michael Todoroff, who will retire June 30 after 11 years with the district; and mental health counselor Wendy Besece, who will retire effective May 30. Custodian James Jackson also submitted his resignation effective May 29 with assistant girls’ basketball coach Jimmy Colabelli effective Jan. 23. Sudvary thanked the impending retirees for their endless service and wished them well. He said it would not be the same without Cammer at the high school while Besece was equally dedicated.
