A new chapter for Community Bread Basket

It appears the luck of the Community Bread Basket is turning, and the local organization will be able to put down some more permanent roots.

For years, the non-profit best known for its food pantry operations and other charitable endeavors, operated out of a building on West Street in Weirton. A variety of issues with that building led to them eventually having to move.

Since then, the Bread Basket has been operating out of temporary space at 3545 Pennsylvania Ave. – always keeping an eye out for something more permanent. After two years, and a big boost from a Weirton native, that dream is now becoming a reality.

This week, it was announced Bill and Nena Beynon had purchased the former WesBanco Bank branch office along Weirton’s Main Street, and gifted the building to the Bread Basket to serve as its new home.

The Beynon’s have been quite charitable with the Bread Basket this year, previously contributing $100,000 to assist with its food programs, and now that charity will give the organization a new life.

The 7,000-square-foot building in the city’s downtown will provide opportunity for the Bread Basket, not just by giving them a new space to provide existing services, but the possibility of growing operations in order to serve more of the community.

On behalf of the Weirton community, we offer our appreciation to the Beynons for their continuing support of the Community Bread Basket and, by extension, Weirton as a whole.

These are vital programs for many of our residents, and it is good to know they will be available for a long time to come.
