Help in fight against cancer

To the Editor, Cancer — this word is heart-wrenching to those who hear it. One out of three Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. This year alone more than 12,500 people will hear that in word in West Virginia. Perhaps you heard that word yourself or you know someone who did. We can help with supporting the American Cancer Society. On June 1, the Brooke/Hancock chapter of the American Cancer Society will host a Relay for Life at Wellsburg Central Park from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Relay for Life is an event to celebrate with cancer survivors and to remember ...

Battling climate change

To the Editor, I am writing this on the 16th anniversary of my admission to the emergency room at Trinity Medical Center West, where my recovery was deemed a miracle facilitated by Dr. Edgar Sanchez, who specialized in cardiovascular and pulmonary medicine, as well as other medical professionals at Trinity. This week’s tree core ring research has revealed that during last summer, June through August, air temperatures were the hottest in the Northern Hemisphere in the last 2,000 years. The instrumental evidence only reaches back as far as 1850 at best, and most records are limited ...

Why you must vote Democrat

To the Editor, In this boiling pot of incessant political turmoil, many are voicing dissatisfaction with the policies currently being implemented by our federal government. The loudest, most vociferous plaints heard concern the massive crossing of our southern border by asylum seekers, asylum seekers in quest of opportunity in our great land. These people are fleeing from oppressive countries where such opportunity is denied. Are the complaints of those in opposition to mass migration justified? Conservatively speaking, some 7 million such guests have arrived here in the past four ...

Thinking about our value

To the Editor, Hancock is the smallest county in West Virginia; 88 square miles precisely, why are we giving the farm away for free? The EDA of West Virginia offered NUCOR (and the commission approved 2-1) a 30-year, tax-free lease for an unlimited amount of our land treating it like it has no value, and not understanding the effects of the economic strategy of our county. Other businesses pay full ticket price, I know many people who pay more taxes for their home compared to the tax bill that NUCOR will pay according to this agreement. How will citizens ever see tax cuts when ...

The slot machines

To the Editor, Pull that handle Look for the bars Ping, ping, ping Did your machine hit? Mine went blank. Winners are rare I am still unaware. How do you win? Does anybody win? Does the house win it all? After all, it’s their house. My money is all gone. Credit cards are maxed. Back to the factory. Boom, bang, being. Two more weeks. No more ping, ping, ping. Wanting a more traditional approach

To the Editor, Bill Maher, cynical, liberal Democrat comedian and sociopolitical pundit, jokes about his increasing popularity among conservatives. He’s found respect among conservatives because, having retained his intellectual objectivity, he understands how insanely skewed Democrat ideologies have become. He’s saying the kinds of things now, that Rush Limbaugh was saying many years ago, which Maher often laughingly dismissed. As Maher has wittily stated, if trends toward claiming “queerness” continue, “by 2050, everybody’ll be (LGBTQ),” also noting that youth always ...
