Weirton Heights VFD memories

To the Editor, A few weeks ago, the Weirton Heights Volunteer Fire Department celebrated their 80th year of existence. Even though they don’t respond to fire calls anymore, the brotherhood and sisterhood still exists. Here are some neat facts about this treasured group. There are a few business men in our town. Others became paid professional firefighters in Weirton. A couple of them became city Fire Chiefs. A few of them were employees of Weirton Steel. Weirton Public Works. And there is more. A few members started the Weirton Heights Rescue School, which was one of the ...

A celebration to remember

To the Editor, On July 2, 2022, the City of Weirton commemorated the 75th anniversary of the City’s incorporation and Independence Day. Last Saturday was a day of celebration, history, remembrance, honor, “Success in Unity,” family fun, and fireworks. We looked back far enough to acknowledge where we have been and then forward to see what’s next. By all accounts, it was a glorious day. There was a parade; bands; Washington, Charleston and Weirton dignitaries; prayers and poems by Pastor Lilly; anthems by Brooke’s Carla Stone; a beauty pageant; contests, rides and vendors; ...

No one to blame but themselves

To the Editor, Norma McCorvey, Roe v. Wade’s “Jane Roe,” had claimed to have been gang-raped and, unable to get an abortion, was forced to carry her rapist’s child. That, she later admitted, and like so much of leftist rhetoric, was a lie — she had simply gotten pregnant, and sought to use it, to bolster the case for legalized abortion. With the Supreme Court’s reversing Roe v. Wade, the American left is bitterly distraught, and wildly angry. The illusory right to abort the consequences of personal irresponsibility must, they insist, be guaranteed, at all costs. ...

Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow you may die. It’s in the bible many times. Take your pick to its message. Barkeep, how about one more for the road? Steve Kopa Weirton

My Sparky

To the Editor, We all have animals as pets one time or another. At my house we have four dogs, and a cat. One of my pets is Sparky, a Bischon Poodle. My wife and I adopted Sparky when he was a mere black and white furball. And so cute. When we saw him at a local flea market, I just had to hold him. I picked him up, and he crawled into my winter vest. Yes, it was a cold February Saturday afternoon. And this little pup wanted some warmth. After much discussion of this little animal, we decided to buy him. Ah the little whimpering was cute in a certain way. As we entered my ...

Shriners still join Masonic Lodge first

To the Editor, Having family in the Wheeling vicinity, I read The Weirton Daily Times article: “It’s a year of celebration for Osiris Shriners”(Mar. 30 issue). I am a Mason and a Shriner myself, and I congratulate the officers and members for celebrating the 150th year of Shriners International; the 135th anniversary of Osiris Shrine Temple, and 100 years of the Shriners Hospital chain. One thing that the article failed to point out is that from the years 1872-2000, a candidate for the Shriners was required to join the Knight Templar Degree of York Rite Masonry and/or the ...
