Finding a place to call home

As the weather gets colder and snow mixes with the drifting leaves, most of us are grateful for the knowledge that a cozy home awaits us at the end of a long day. But thousands of West Virginians are experiencing both sheltered and unsheltered homelessness — and according to data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, their number is growing. Meanwhile, a SchoolHouse Connection report for 2024-25 estimated more than 15,000 students do not have a stable place to sleep — and those are just the ones that have come to the attention of the public school ...

A lack of energy at governor’s summit

I’ve said it before, but energy is going to be a huge issue heading into the 2026 legislative session in January. But walking around the Governor’s Energy Summit last Thursday, I didn’t get a sense of excitement. That was very clear during Gov. Patrick Morrisey’s remarks last Thursday morning. It had already started off on a somber note with the announcement of the death of miner Steve Lipscomb after rescuers found him in a Nicholas County mine. Morrisey pivoted to his energy economic development announcements that have come to fruition since October, but many of the applause ...

Taking pride

To the Editor, Words can not express our heartfelt thanks to Hancock County School Superintendent, Mr. Dan Enich, Weirton Elementary School Head Principal, Ms. Denise Mirasola, the administrators, teachers and students for the beautiful heartfelt Veterans Day Celebration. It was a first-class event, with everyone performing their very best! They were terrific! May God Bless the United States of America. We are proud to be Americans! Jane and Bob Watson, (USN Veteran) Weirton

Sometimes, it takes a community effort

Earlier this month, the Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation received the first portion of a large monetary contribution to assist with a planned improvement to Marland Heights Park. The Weirton Rotary Club has pledged up to $50,000 to redesign the existing tennis courts at the park, including new fencing, resurfacing, and lining, to go from two tennis courts to one tennis court and four pickleball courts. The check presentation held at the park included members of the Rotary Club, officials with the City of Weirton and Weirton Park Board, and representatives of the Weirton ...

What’s behind GOP humiliation?

To the Editor, After listening to plaintive responses as to why the GOP lost elections held in New York, Maryland and Virginia, I’m at a loss as to why these frustrated elephants can’t fathom the real reason for their humiliating defeats. The elections I speak of are the mayorship of New York city and the governorships of Maryland and Virginia. Repeatedly and ad nauseam we hear flawed messages from GOP political strategists, viz., a less-than-expected turnout on the part of their constituents, not to mention voting irregularities favoring their opponents. These claims might make ...

Holiday events are upon us

We’re solidly into November, and, while the weather has offered a few hints during the past week, the calendar reminds us that the spirit of the holiday season is ready to shine brightly in communities throughout the Tri-State Area. Area activities got underway Thursday in Weirton, when the annual North End Christmas Tree Lighting was held at the corner of Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. That spirit will continue to shine in Weirton on Nov. 22, with the Christmas on Main Street event. Scheduled to run from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. in front of the Millsop Community Center, it will ...
