When the days get darker, remember you’re not alone

As daylight fades and temperatures drop, something quiet but heavy often begins to settle in. The holidays are approaching, and while they may bring bright lights and moments of joy, they can also stir up anxiety, loneliness and stress. In our region, when finances tighten around gift-giving and travel, and when family gatherings bring old wounds or tension to the surface, anxiety and low mood can show up fast. The reality is, this season affects people more than we realize. Some are grieving. Some are overwhelmed by the pressure to make everything perfect. Others are navigating ...

EPA, EPW working together to deliver for West Virginia

When you reflect on the history of the Mountain State, the words “West Virginia” and “energy” are inextricably linked. Coal was first discovered in West Virginia in 1742, natural gas was first struck in 1815, and the state’s first oil-producing well was completed in 1860. Each of these discoveries happened before West Virginia was recognized as the nation’s 35th state. In fact, West Virginians were enjoying public electric streetlamps a full three years before electric lights were installed in the White House in 1891. When it comes to energy, West Virginia has always led the ...

The tragedy of a life lived in lowercase

There is a quiet kind of tragedy that doesn’t make the headlines. You will not hear about it on the evening news, nor will you read about it in your morning newspaper. You will not even locate it in the obituaries section on a funeral home’s website. Why? Well, because technically, she never really died. She just never quite lived. She forgot how to live. She forgot how to ...

Grateful for our doctors

To the Editor, In recent weeks, I experienced several severe and profuse nosebleeds that required multiple trips to the emergency room. After being told by several ENT offices that it would take three weeks to get an appointment, I was fortunate to be referred to Dr. Jeffrey Banyas at Weirton Medical. From the very first phone call, Dr. Banyas’s office staff was exceptionally helpful, kind, and accommodating. They were able to schedule me within just two hours of my call — something almost unheard of these days. Dr. Banyas himself was personable, understanding, and demonstrated ...

Dig deeper during the holidays

Tri-State Area residents take pride in doing what we can to take care of one another. If there is a need, we try to meet it. Given that there are still so many struggling throughout the region, that need is not likely to lessen any time soon. It is fortunate, then, that according to WalletHub’s annual report on Most Charitable States, that our region has a couple of the highest-ranking states: Pennsylvania is ninth, according to the Washington, D.C.-based personal financial website, while Ohio is 16th. West Virginia ranks 44th. Pennsylvania ranks 12th for volunteering and service, ...

People and safety over politics

As West Virginians watched for news of the trapped foreman of a mining crew in an Alpha Metallurgical Resources mine in Nicholas County, just days after learning of the death of another miner in an accident at a Mettiki Coal mine in Tucker County, the health and safety of our coal miners was brought back into our collective minds. For the miners themselves, a renewed fight over their health has been brewing for months, as an Associated Press report over the weekend delved into the fight to get the Trump administration and the U.S. Department of Labor to stop rolling back or delaying ...
