Addressing state’s abandoned wells

Abandoned oil and gas wells have been a problem in West Virginia for more than a century. Lawmakers did the right thing during the most recent regular session by passing House Bill 3336, which allows operators to fill wells with cement without having to remove the central casing. That might not mean much to a lot of us, but the process is said to be easier, cheaper and safer. It could also help protect groundwater, and with staying on top of modern efforts. “It gives accounting for the casings that are put in,” said Del. Mark Zatezalo, R-Hancock, “the double casings that are ...

Congratulations Weirton Hall of Fame class

Many of our communities have halls of fame, established to recognize the contributions of generations of residents who have sought to better their hometowns. One such hall of fame recently announced their 2025 inductees, and we take this time to offer our congratulations. The Weirton Hall of Fame was established by Weirton Council in 2008 to honor “outstanding accomplishments” in six categories: Business, Industry and Professions; Education and Religion; Music and Fine Arts; Philanthropy; Public Service; and Sports and Athletics. A committee, comprised of volunteers, annually ...

Congratulations Class of 2025

Young men and women up and down the Ohio Valley are preparing to take their final steps as high school students in the coming days. Many are taking their final examinations, clearing out their lockers, seeing their teachers, and many of their classmates, for the final time. They have their caps and gowns and are preparing to walk across the stage to receive their diploma. The ceremony is but a relatively brief moment in their lives, but an important one nonetheless, because of what it signifies. To those high school seniors, this is a milestone moment in your lives. You are ...

Guest Column: Filing formal and informal complaints

I suppose it would come as no surprise to you that most of the comments we receive at the Public Service Commission are from people who are complaining about their utility services or the rates they must pay. We have multiple ways by which you can file comments with the Commission. These include filing online, by mail, or physically coming into the Commission to state your mind while we are in session. Today, I would like to spend a ...

Weirton Lions extend thanks

To the Editor, The Weirton Lions Club recently held their “Dancing Thru the Decades” fundraiser at T. Kosciusko Hall in Weirton. What a success! The community members who attended were treated to great music from DJ Keith Shreve; a Chinese Auction; 50/50 raffle; and a wine wagon raffle. It was great to have community members, including some of our local City of Weirton council members and officials, in attendance. The purpose of this fundraiser was to raise money to purchase hand-held eye screening equipment that Lions can use at local schools, health fairs and other events ...

How was your Mother’s Day?

To the Editor, Like a lot of folks my age, Mother’s Day is a complicated time. It marks the loss of the person who was always in your corner. No matter how tough the opponent was or how badly beaten emotionally or physically, she had always been there to apply ointments or prepare a bowl of chicken soup. In my case, it was the anniversary of her 2007 surgery, which her strong will carried through all almost dying in the operating room, the way my father had in 2004, three years earlier. Only to lose her two months later to cancer. I traveled to Walmart on Sunday Morning, witnessing ...
