Crusaders, Golden Bears will meet in title game
WELLSBURG — Catholic Central and Oak Glen will square off at 8 p.m. today for the championship of the 2019 Brooke Lady Bruins Tip-Off Tournament.
The Crusaders, now 2-1, advanced with a 38-28 victory over Linsly in Thursday’s opener. In the nightcap, Oak Glen, thanks to 19 points from Reece Enochs, knocked off the host Bruins, 49-41.
Linsly and Brooke will collide in the consolation game at 6 p.m.
Central, which captured the tournament crown a season ago, used a strong fourth quarter to derail the Cadets, who were making their season debut.
The teams went back and forth during the opening 16 minutes, with Central grabbing a 16-15 halftime lead. Thanks to a Morgan Green triple, the Crusaders were up 27-24 heading into the fourth.
Powered by the inside games of senior Hannah Olszewski and freshman Ellen Rohde, Central outscored Linsly, 11-4, to seal the victory.
Olszewski took game-scoring honors with 13 points. She also hauled down nine rebounds. Rohde and Isabella Oliver finished with six points each. Oliver again paced the Crusaders with 12 rebounds. Green contributed five points.
Junior guard Brinley Steen knocked down 11 points for the Cadets, who are playing this season without a senior on the roster. Neveah Cook added nine points, connecting twice from behind the arc.
BIG SECOND HALF
Oak Glen held a slim 23-21 halftime lead over Brooke but outscored the hosts, 26-20, in the second half to secure its win.
Enochs, a 5-foot-6 junior guard, scored 14 of her points after the break. She knocked down a couple of triples in the third quarter, as the Golden Bears outscored Brooke, 17-8. In the fourth, she added five more, three coming from the charity stripe.
Senior Brittney Giorgini contributed 10 for Oak Glen, which, like Brooke, was making its season debut. Alexa Andrews, also a senior, added eight points.
Freshman forward Ava Bolen got her varsity career off to a strong start by netting 13 points to pace Brooke. She accounted for Brooke’s first seven points. Angelina Lippoli, also a freshman, added five points.
