Toronto slams, sweeps United Local

HANOVERTON — The Toronto softball team swept United Local in a doubleheader on Saturday.

The Red Knights won 12-7 in the opening contest. Riley Kinsey picked up the win, allowed seven hits and struck out nine in the complete game. Michelle Anderson had the big bat with two doubles, a triple and four RBIs. Brianna Burruss collected a single, two doubles and three runs batted in. Andrea Reeves added a single, double and one RBI.

In Game 2, Toronto only needed five innings for a 17-6 victory. Reeves went the distance and got the win, allowed seven hits and punched out four. She helped her own cause at the plate with a single, double and grand slam. Anderson had four more RBIs and three singles. Ashton Thomas produced a home run and three RBIs. Kinsey singled twice and doubled once, while Abby Liddick singled and doubled.

Steubenville sweeps tri

STEUBENVILLE — The Steubenville softball squad bested University and Poland on Saturday.

In Game 1, Big Red won, 9-3, over University. Lakyn Blackburn went the distance to pick up the victory. She allowed three runs on five hits, six walks and struck out four. At the plate, she socked a home run, single and four RBIs.

Jules King singled three times. Mary Marshall had a single, double and one RBI. Adrianna Brown also collected a single and a double. Mea Lulla roped a pinch-hit two-bagger.

In Game 2 with Poland, Steubenville won, 9-5. King pitched a complete-game victory, allowed four earned runs on seven hits, two walks and struck out an amazing 13. Offensively, she had three more base knocks.

Marshall had two singles and three RBIs. Blackburn singled and drove home a pair of runs. Maggi Cucarese also singled twice. Tori Mitchell and Gia Bowman evenly divided two RBIs.

BASEBALL

Big Red sweeps Coschocton

COSHOCTON — The Steubenville baseball team brought out the brooms Saturday in sweeping a doubleheader from Coshocton on Saturday.

After rallying for an 11-5 victory in the opener, Fred Heatherington’s now 7-3 crew rode a stellar pitching performance by Andrew Gresko to a 5-0 verdict in the nightcap.

The Redskins pushed three runs across in the home half of the third and led Game 1, 4-3, after four. Big Red scored three in the fifth, added a single tally in the sixth then exploded for four in the seventh to put the game on ice.

Caesen Sutton paced Big Red’s nine-hit attack with three singles and an RBI. Quinn McCoy and Cooper Blackburn connected for a double and a single. They both drove home two runs. Kye Fleming had a single and two RBIs. Gresko contributed a run-scoring base hit.

Lee Sewell started on the hill. The freshman surrendered four hits and four earned runs. He gave way to Aaron Ferguson in the third. Ferguson was extremely effective, as he did not allow a hit in his 4 2/3 innings of work. He recorded seven strikeouts and gave up a run in the fifth.

In the nightcap, Gresko delivered a complete-game pitching gem. He limited Coshocton to just two hits, both singles. He fanned three and walked just one.

Sutton stayed hot at the plate, connecting for two doubles and knocking home a pair of runs. Big Red scored twice in both the first and fourth innings. The visitors added a lone tally in the third.

J.T. Thompson had an RBI single. Hakim Edwards, Ferguson, Gresko and Zach Francis also singled for the Big Red.

Steubenville tentatively will begin a three-game home stand Tuesday when Edison visits Vaccaro Field. Weir High travels across the river Wednesday, and New Philadelphia is on the schedule for Thursday.

Brooke 6, Beaver Local 5

CALCUTTA — The Brooke baseball squad edged out a 6-5 victory over Beaver Local on Saturday.

Alex Jezierski picked up an emotional complete-game victory. Jezierski, the nephew of late head coach Ron Ujcich, Jr., allowed two earned runs on six hits, walked a pair and struck out eight. At the plate, he tallied a single, double and two RBIs.

“I’m proud of him for how he’s handled and played so far this year,” head coach C.J. Besece said. “He came up big at the plate, as well. We put him in a tough spot in the sixth with some mistakes, but he never let it get to him. Having a tough mentality is what we preach, and he was the definition of it (Saturday).

“Ronnie is watching over him and is very proud of his nephew, as we all are.”

Braelynn Sperringer had two singles and drove home a run. Andrew Coursin produced a single and RBI. Anthony Bachinski singled two times.

Edison 14, Wellsville 1

RICHMOND — The Edison baseball team only needed five innings to rout Wellsville, 14-1, on Saturday.

Cam Cooley got the win on the mound. He allowed one run on two hits, no walks and struck out six in four innings. Blake Connelly and Ian McBane each singled twice, with McBane also driving home two runs. Eli Wilson also singled twice and drove home one. Joey Booth picked up a pair of RBIs. Matt Parsons and Isaac Zastudil evenly divided two singles and two RBIs.

Toronto 13, Youngstown East 1

TORONTO — The Toronto baseball squad ripped Youngstown East, 13-1, in five innings on Saturday.

Chris Parker started the first two frames, while Avery Wiegand tossed the third. Both combined for no runs on no hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Blake Close closed out the final two innings, striking out two and allowing one hit.

Offensively, Dom Bouscher drove home four runs and doubled. Brant Reeves had a single and two RBIs, while Evan Wolter also drove home a pair. Ryan Matyas added a double and an RBI.
