Big second half run propels HC over Creek

WINTERSVILLE – After Indian Creek surged ahead with a third quarter run, Harrison Central’s seniors got vocal during a timeout.
“In the timeout, I didn’t have to say anything,” Harrison Central head coach Aaron Foldi said. “Our seniors said, ‘They went on their run, now lets go on ours.'”
Go on their own run they did, scoring 38 of the next 45 points to take control and pull away for a 63-43 victory Friday night on Coach D Court.
Creek had gone up 32-23 with a 9-0 run to start the third quarter and still led 36-35 after three quarter despite a 12-4 Huskies run, but Harrison Central then started the fourth with a 26-3 run to take over completely.
Aiding in the run was a strong performance at the foul line as the Huskies went 30 of 38 on the night, led by 11 makes each from Hayden Cassidy and Mykel Quito.
“The second half, we really amped it up,” Foldi said. “We came out a little flat, but we had a lot of energy in the second half. All of the getting to the free throw line started on the defensive end. Those guys really turned up the energy and urgency and we started getting downhill.
“We talked about needing to get north-south instead of east-west, when you’re going north-south the refs are forced to make those foul calls.”
Quito netted a game-high 23 points for the Huskies, who had twice as many free throw makes as they did field goals in the game. Cassidy finished with 19 points, 15 of which came on the fourth quarter when we went 9 of 10 from the line.
“I give a lot of credit to (Indian Creek), they play hard all the time and they do the right things here,” Foldi, who is an Indian Creek alumni and former assistant coach, said. “They gave a great effort, we have a lot of respect for them. We’re happy to be able to go into the break with a win.”
After Indian Creek (0-3) had used the run to go ahead and used good defense to keep the once-beaten Huskies (5-1) at bay for three quarters, the momentum swing was just too much to reverse for the Redskins.
“We’re pleased with our effort, our effort is getting better every game,” Indian Creek head coach Joe Dunlevy said. “Our kids battled, I give them credit for that. (Harrison Central) did a nice job of getting to the line. We were fouling them, we didn’t mean to be fouling them, we didn’t want to foul them but we fouled them.”
Creek, which went to the line just 11 times by comparison, was led by Drake Freshwater with 10 points and a pair of 3-pointers.
Both teams are off until after Christmas, the Huskies hosting Beaver Local next Friday and Creek taking on Claymont on Wednesday.
