WEIRTON — The Red Riders are rolling into the tourney.
Weir High used a couple of big runs to create distance and continued its strong push down the stretch with a 80-35 victory over visiting Brooke on senior night Monday.
The win is the Red Riders’ third-straight and fourth in their last five games to finish the regular season at the .500 mark (11-11) for the first time in four seasons.
“The girls did a good job of getting the ball and getting out in transition,” Weir High head coach Rick Stead said. “We finished the regular season strong. That’s where you want to be at going into sectionals next week.”
Rayna Hoover led all scorers with 25 points, going a perfect 11 of 11 from the foul line to lead the way, while seniors Olivia Baker and Mea Kaufman each tallied 16 points on the night they were recognized.
“Our seniors, Olivia and Mea, really did a great job of getting up and down the floor,” Stead said. “I thought they both played extremely well. They’ve played well all year and gave a great effort all year. Both of them are four-year letter winners, they listen and they give their best effort. I’m proud of them, I can’t say enough about them.
“It was good to win for them and have them play well, you can’t ask for much more.”
The Red Riders have at least one more home game as they open tournament host Oak Glen in the Class AAA Region 1, Section 1 semifinals next Tuesday. The Red Riders have a pair of wins over the Golden Bears, including a victory at home last week.
For Brooke (1-19), who did manage one of its best offensive outputs of the season, the Red Riders runs were too much to be able to stay within reach.
“We’re young and make mistakes, it’s been a season of turnovers and mistakes,” Brooke head coach Amy Serevicz said. “We’ll do three good things and then seven bad things. But, we’re learning. The girls hustle and they do what they’re supposed to do. Our defense has gotten better as the season has gone on, but our offense hasn’t matched it. We’re shooting a lot in the gym, it just hasn’t caught up yet.”
Rylee Schwertfeger, the young Bruins senior who is having a strong season, netted 21 points and knocked down five 3s.
“Rylee has carried us offensively,” Serevicz said. “She has built up to this year, she came on strong down the stretch last year and I knew this year would be a good year for her. She broke 200 points for the season.”
After the Bruins were within 6-4 a couple minutes in, Weir High closed the opening quarter on a 16-3 run to lead 22-7 after one, then started the second quarter on a 12-3 spurt to push the run to 28-6.
The Bruins netted seven straight and cut the deficit to 40-21 at the break, but a 14-0 Red Rider run in the third quarter allowed the subs to play most of the fourth quarter.
“Brooke is going through a rough patch, but Amy is still getting her kids out playing hard and staying together,” Stead said. “I thought they gave a good effort.”
Brooke has one more regular season game before the tournament, hosting Big Red on Thursday.
