Wellsburg Post 34 stays alive in Area 1 tournament again
WHEELING — Wellsburg Post 34 American Legion baseball team entered Wednesday facing elimination for a second-straight day.
And, for a second-straight day, Post 34 was victorious in the Area 1 Tournament loser’s bracket to stay alive and earn at least one more day on the diamond.
Wellsburg, facing a deficit again after coming back to win on Tuesday, plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning and held on in the bottom half to defeat Parkersburg Post 15, 6-5.
With Parkersburg up 5-4, Madonna product TJ DeCapio reached first on a dropped third stike and Blue Dons teammate Matt Geer scored on the play to knot the score.
Caleb Billick, a Brooke product, then singled in a run to put Post 34 on top for good.
Wellsburg had led 1-0 early before falling behind 5-1. A three-run fifth inning got Post 34 within striking distance to set up the rally.
Geer was the winning pitcher, going four scoreless innings in relief. He and Zac O’Mery had a double at the plate, while DeCapio had a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs.
Post 34 will again play in an elimination game today.
