Bruins top Central for fifth win in last six games
WELLSBURG — The Brooke softball team sent its three seniors out in style.
Brooke plated 11 runs in the bottom of the second inning against Catholic Central, and the Bruins went on to defeat the Crusaders, 19-1 in five innings Wednesday afternoon at Brooke.
“It was a real good day,” Brooke (6-18) head coach Tom Diserio said. “Our good days started a week-and-a-half ago. We got a win against Buckeye Local, and we had a five-game winning streak. We had a tough game last night. We didn’t win the game on the scoreboard, but our bats were alive and our fielding was on point. We have come together as a team.
“We played Catholic Central earlier in the year in a scrimmage. They have come a long way. They brought the program back after two years of not having a team. Coach (Butch) Brown and Coach (Eddie) Stock are doing a good job. They are developing their program.”
Karson Drumm went the distance and picked up the win for the Green-and-Gold. Drumm struck out 10 without walking a batter. She allowed one run on two hits.
The Crusaders used two pitchers. Alexis Lathem started and pitched the first two innings. She struck out five and walked one. She was replaced by Genna Free, who started the game at shortstop, to start the third. Free also struck out one and walked two in her two innings of relief work.
The girls from Brooke County outhit the visitors, 15-2. Neither team produced an extra-base hit in the game.
For Brooke, Emma Hayman contributed three singles and three RBI, Emma Michel tallied two singles and three RBI and Emma Bober recorded two singles and two RBI. Also, Katelyn Utt collected a single and two RBI, Maggie Diserio, Emilee McKinney, Jazzy Wood and Marionna Dipaolo all produced a single and an RBI and Maia Diserio delivered two singles. Finally, Sophia Wilkerson ended up with a pair of RBI, Gabby Hornick chipped in with a base hit and Presais Wright added an RBI.
Free finished with a single and an RBI for the visitors from Jefferson County, while Miriam Free also singled.
The Bruins scored 11 runs in the second, three in the third and five in the fourth.
The Crusaders scored their lone run in the fourth.
Brooke has now won six of its last seven games.
“The girls finally caught the break they needed,” Coach Diserio said. “They have come together. Our defense is making plays. Offensively, we are hitting the ball. We’re not leaving runners on base. That is what its been. We have come together. They got the monkey off their back, and they have been playing well. We want this to carry this momentum over into the postseason.”
The game was the final game for Brooke’s three seniors – Maia Diserio, Hayman and McKinney. Following the game, the girls ran the bases one last time.
“It is especially nice for them to win their last game on their home field,” Coach Diserio said. “We also won on Senior Night. Now, we won on their last game on their home field. It could be the last game on this field for everybody. We are going to be getting a new field.
“It was great to send them out with a win in their last home game. To cap it off, they were able to run the bases one last time. They got to run the bases in front of the fans and their families who have supported them throughout their careers.”
Earlier this season, McKinney picked up the 100th hit of her career. She now has 106 hits and 50 RBI in 96 career games.
“We looked into it, and it is a highly celebrated achievement in the softball world,” Coach Diserio said about getting 100 hits in a career. “She is dedicated to the game. She is committed to the game. She has the ability to produce hits and score runs on offense. That is they key to having a successful season. That is key to having a successful career.”

Brooke is slated to play Union Local at 5 p.m. Friday on the road before playing a doubleheader Saturday at Parkersburg South. Brooke will play Parkersburg South at 11 a.m. before taking on Cabell Midland at 1 p.m.
