Brooke can’t slow down Martins Ferry
WELLSBURG — The Brooke softball team was unable to silence the Martins Ferry bats.
The Purple Riders pounded out 14 hits, including five extra-base hits, and 11 runs en route to an 11-0 victory against the Bruins in the first of Brooke’s two games Friday evening on the road.
“I told the girls that between Coach (Jerry) Magistro and Coach (Jim) DiCarlo, who we know very well, that our math may be wrong, but those two have a combined 120 years of coaching softball,” Brooke (8-11) head coach Tommy Diserio said. “They are so knowledgable. What they have forgotten about this game, surpasses our knowledge. We tried to add up our years, and it doesn’t come close to those two gentlemen.
“Martins Ferry is very fundamentally sound. They play small ball vrey well. They do a great job with it. The execute in the field. They are just an all-around good team. With that coaching staff, they really are a formidable team. There’s a reason their record is what it is. They only have one loss. That loss came against Wheeling Park, and I talked to Coach DiCarlo after that game he told me they just flat out played a bad game.
“They have got great hitters. They have girls who commit to softball. They are all around good ballplayers, and they are even better people.”
Maddie Lucas led off the game with a double to left for Martins Ferry (16-1), and the centerfielder scored on a one-out groundout by Giana Chirpas to give the Purple Riders an early 1-0 lead.
Brooke had a golden opportunity to answer in the home half of the inning, but the Bruins left the bases loaded. With one out, pitcher Eden McKinney reached on an error, and Avery Rado and Jazz Wood followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases, however, Monica Tedeschi was able to pitch herself out of harm’s way as she retired the next two batters via a strikeout and a flyout to escape the inning unscathed stranding all three runners.
After escaping danger in the first, the visitors added to their lead in the second. Kendyl Brandon singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Tori Long walked. Both baserunners advanced on a groundout before Ella Mamone singled to center scoring both runners to increase Martins Ferry’s advantage out to 3-0. McKinney then retired the next two hitters on a strikeout and a groundout to prevent the Purple Riders from adding to their advantage.
The Bruins had another runner reach base in the bottom of the inning as Gabby Hornick walked to lead things off, however, she also stranded on the basepaths thanks to a strikeout and a pair of groundouts.
Martins Ferry extended its advantage to 6-0 in the third thanks to a trio of runs. After a lineout, Chirpas doubled to left and Gracie Lucas followed with another double there to score Chirpas to make it a 4-0 ballgame. After a flyout, Long singled home Lucas making it 5-0, and Long advanced to second on an error on the play. Then, Keigan Brandon reached on a single, and Long scored following an error on the play and Brandon moved up to second. The hosts were able to get out of the inning on a strikeout by Rado, who came on to pitch in relief of McKinney.
The Green-and-Gold needed to respond, however, Tedeschi retired them in order on a groundout and two flyouts to bring her team back to the plate with a six-run lead.
The girls from Belmont County continued to get the job at the dish in the fourth as Ava Rose singled to lead off the inning before Chirpas produced a two-out single scoring McKenzie Saxton, who came in to run for her team’s catcher, and the shortstop advanced to second on an error on the play. Then, Gracie Lucas collected her second Chirpas-scoring double to make the score, 8-0.
Next, Kendyl Brandon then singled and stole second before Long singled home Lucas and Brandon to make the lead, 10-0. Alivia Reese, who batted for Keigan Brandon, was walked before the home team was able to get out of the inning on a groundout.
Hornick singled with two outs in the fourth for Brooke, but she was stranded there following a strikeout.
The Purple Riders recorded the final run in the fifth. Maddie Lucas tripled with one out, and Ava Harvey singled home Malena Catalano, who came in to run for Lucas.
The Bruins were retired in order in their half of the inning to bring the game to an end.
“We had some hits,” Diserio said. “We had the same umpires for both games, and after the East Liverpool game one of the umpires came up to me and told me we do a good job of consistently hitting the ball to the fielders, and we do. We do put the ball in play. If the girls are playing in, we hit the ball on the ground. If the girls are playing deep, we hit right at the fielders. We have to continue to work on finding the gaps and not hitting it right to the defense.
“Both teams played great defense. It was just one in one game we came up short, and we were able to win the other.”
Both teams used multiple pitchers.
Tedecschi picked up the win for Martins Ferry. She struck out three while walking one in her four innings of work. Mamone came on and pitched the fifth. She struck out one without walking a batter.
McKinney took the loss for Brooke. She struck out one and walked one in her 2 2/3 innings of work. She was replaced by Rado, who recorded one strikeout and no walks in her one inning of relief. Rado was relieved by Hornick, who pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for the Bruins. She did not record a strikeout while walking one.
Brooke responded in Game 2 by rallying to defeat East Liverpool, 8-7.
Brooke is scheduled to play Edison at 11 a.m. today at home.
Martins Ferry is slated to play Madonna at noon today at home.
